Saturday's activities highlight the village's faith heritage.
LOWELLVILLE -- Lowellville's Italian traditions will be showcased starting today in an event that is one of the village's longest-running traditions, the 110th annual Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival.
The festival, which begins at 6 p.m., will run through Saturday at the village festival grounds.
Tonight's festival opening is Family Night, featuring music, games and carnival rides. It also is opening night of the 10th annual bocce tournament, with teams from all over the area scheduled to compete. Call Dave Rogers at (330) 536-9220 to register a team for the tournament.
The Mount Carmel Band will perform all four days of the festival. Formed in 1927, it's made up of current and former residents of the village and plays traditional Italian favorites and original compositions by members.
Upcoming days
On Thursday, the Mt. Carmel men's and ladies' clubs will sponsor more than 100 disabled children in a special night of entertainment.
The children will be escorted by the Lowellville police and fire departments to the festival grounds for free rides and games and a luncheon. Each child will receive a stuffed animal. The village is still accepting volunteers to help with the day's activities.
Music and a kung fu demonstration highlight the night's activities and "A.C. and Kelly" from HOT 101 will also make an appearance.
On Friday, activities will feature a traditional Italian counting game, morra. Registration for the third annual Frank Lellio Sr. Tournament will begin at 5:30 p.m., with play starting at 6. Lellio was a member of the Mount Carmel Morra Team who died in 2003.

The Sonny Daze band will perform at 7:45 p.m., and Tina, a disc jockey from 93.3 WNCD will make an appearance.
On Saturday, the village's faith traditions are observed with a parade at 9:30 a.m. from the festival grounds to Holy Rosary Church for a 10 a.m. Mass. A luncheon at the festival grounds will follow.
Music from the Easy Company band is part of Saturday night's program, which concludes with a fireworks display from Zambelli International at 11:45 p.m.
