Swimming meet
YOUNGSTOWN -- YSU senior Katy Malys won the 50-yard freestyle and was part of two winning relays in a meet with the Denison Big Red on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Natatorium.
Malys swam a lifetime-best time of 25.66 in the 50 for the win and added a lifetime-best of 55.65 in the 100 free to place second. She also out-touched Denison's Lisa Fry by 0.01 seconds as the anchor of YSU's winning 200 medley relay and led off the winning 200 freestyle relay.
Denison's depth proved to be too much for the Penguins as the Big Red -- who finished third at the 2004 Division III National Championship -- held on for a 154-140 victory.
Kalyn Leveto swept the diving events with tallies of 297.10 in the 1-meter and 255.90 in the 3-meter, while Brittany Senn won the 100 free (55.59) and Jordan Dunn won the 500 free (5:25.04).
Erin Carter placed second in the 400 IM (4:46.22) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.41), while Dunn added a second-place finish in the 1,000 free (11:02.25). Erin Mazzant placed second in both diving events with a score of 221.45 in the 1-meter and a 191.05 in the 3-meter.
Also earning second-place finishes were Becky Bertuzzi in the 200 free (2:01.47), Missy Wiese in the 50 free (25.85) and Julia Darling in the 200 breaststroke (2:35.30).
Track and field
BOWLING GREEN -- Sophomore Danielle Bolt and senior Aaliyah Gillespie each set school records to highlight YSU's effort at Perry Fieldhouse.
Bolt broke her own record in the the 60-meter dash with a winning time of 7.57 seconds, while Gillespie broke her own mark in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles with a time 8.71. Gillespie finished second by 0.01 seconds in the finals with a time of 8.77.
The Penguins finished fourth in the meet with 153 points behind Cincinnati (253), Bowling Green (224.50) and Toledo (160.50). IPFW came in fifth with 59 points.
Bolt also had a strong showing in the 200 with a second-place time of 25.37. Jeanna Cunningham added third-place finishes in the 60 (7.86) and the 200 (25.60), while Emily Wollet placed fourth in the 400 in 1:00.90.
In the middle distance, Yandeh Joh placed second in the 600 with a time off 1:39.97 and Marielle Glanz placed third in the 800 in 2:19.24.
Carly Youlton led the jumpers with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 11.17 meters and fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.48. Yoh finished fourth in the long jump with a mark of 5.53.|
Freshman Bethany Anderson barely missed breaking the school record in the shot put with a third-place mark of 13.37 meters and added a fifth-place heave of 14.7 in the weight throw. Katy Williams placed second in the weight throw with a mark of 15.74, while Lindsey Hill added a fifth-place throw of 12.75 in the shot put.
Fight hunger
YOUNGSTOWN -- YSU, Giant Eagle, 27 First News and The Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley have teamed up to fight hunger when the men's basketball team hosts Wisconsin-Green Bay on Feb. 5.
Any fan bringing a Giant Eagle brand nonperishable food item or any other nonperishable food product will receive one complimentary game ticket for that day's contest.
The game will tip off at noon.

YOUNGSTOWN -- There will be no Curbstone Coaches noon luncheon Monday.
The Curbstone Coaches will hold their annual All-Star Banquet tonight at Mt. Carmel, honoring the football all-stars from the City Series, Steel Valley Conference, Metro Athletic Conference and Inter-County League.

Ogilvie leads Hope
LA QUINTA, Calif. -- Joe Ogilvie turned in a steady if unspectacular round Saturday, shooting a 3-under-par 69 that kept him ahead of the pack at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.
Driving more accurately than earlier in the week but leaving some of his irons well short of the pin, Ogilvie still managed an eagle and two birdies on par 5s at La Quinta Country Club to go to 26-under 262.
Peter Lonard of Australia remained two shots behind after also shooting a 69 during the fourth round of the five-day tournament.
Former British Open champion Justin Leonard was another stroke back after a 64 that left him 23 under. Tim Clark had a 66 and was fourth at 266.
Defending champion Phil Mickelson, who also won the Hope in 2002, had a 68 and was in a group at 268, six shots off the pace.
The 30-year-old Ogilvie, looking for his first tour win, made his eagle on the 512-yard 11th hole by reaching the green in two and rolling in a 12-foot putt.
Ogilvie's best finish on the PGA Tour is a second-place tie with Mickelson at New Orleans last year.
Lonard, 37, the winner of a string of titles in Australia but none in America, has eight top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour, including a third-place showing during his rookie season of 2002.
Leonard has won eight times, including the 1997 British Open.
North wins Senior Bowl
MOBILE, Ala. -- Darren Sproles ran for a touchdown, Charlie Frye threw for 138 yards and a score and Ohio State's Mike Nugent kicked three field goals in the Senior Bowl to lead the North to a 23-13 victory Saturday over the South.
The game capped a weeklong audition for top NFL prospects and wound up showcasing lesser-known players such as Akron's Frye and the game's smallest player in Kansas State's Sproles, who's 5-foot-5.
Frye was the North's most effective quarterback, completing 10 of 12 passes and hitting Northwestern's Noah Herron for a 22-yard touchdown in the final minutes to earn MVP honors.
Purdue's Kyle Orton was 6-of-13 for 51 yards with an interception on his first series.
Miller wins slalom
BORMIO, Italy -- Bode Miller picked up his first victory in six weeks, taking the gold medal in the super giant slalom Saturday to open skiing's world championships.
Miller covered the course in 1 minute, 27.55 seconds. This was Miller's sixth medal in the world championships or Olympics.
Michael Walchhofer, the only skier faster than Miller at the final checkpoint, won the silver medal and finished 0.14 seconds behind, leading a 2-3-4 finish for Austria. Benjamin Raich, second to Miller in the overall World Cup standings, took the bronze, 0.68 back. He was followed by Hermann Maier, 0.85 behind.
Miller's U.S. teammate Daron Rahlves, the 2001 super-G world champion, was 10th.
