PREP BASKETBALL Liberty wins with hot shooting from Cornwell

LIBERTY -- Brandon Cornwell scored 10 of his game-high 13 points in the first quarter, helping Liberty to a 14-7 lead, and the Leopards went on to a 43-17 victory over Hubbard in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game Friday night.
The Leopards (11-3, 8-0 TAC) were 17-of-36 (47.2 percent) from the floor and held a 28-24 edge in rebounds. Cornwell and Donovan Fletcher had five rebounds each to lead Liberty.
Bryan Boyce scored six points to lead Hubbard (3-10, 2-6), and Todd Coonce had six rebounds. The Eagles were just 8-for-36 (22.2 percent) from the floor and 1-of-4 at the foul line.
Lakeview 47, Newton Falls 31
CORTLAND -- Lakeview kept pace with Liberty in the TAC standings.
The Bulldogs (12-2, 7-1) will play host to Liberty Feb. 4.
In Friday's victory, Trevor Mathews and Matt Pytlik led a balanced scoring attack with eight points each. Alex Koltsov added nine rebounds and eight assists.
Lakeview outrebounded Newton Falls, 33-13.
Eric Medallis scored 15 points for the Tigers (7-7, 4-4).
Brookfield 51, Girard 44
BROOKFIELD -- Sam King scored 22 points and pulled in 11 rebounds to lead Brookfield.
The Warriors (7-7, 2-6 TAC) led 25-16 at halftime.
Jon Smerchansky made three 3-pointers and finished with nine points to pace Girard (3-11, 2-6).
Lordstown 54, Southington 46
LORDSTOWN -- Brandon Wickline scored 18 points and had 15 rebounds to lead Lordstown in a Northeastern Athletic Conference game.
The Red Devils led 19-4 after the first quarter.
Jake Dieugenio scored 16 points for Lordstown (4-11, 3-7) and Josh Lackey added 11.
Southington is 4-11, 3-7.
Maplewood 55, Bloomfield 30
CORTLAND -- Jake Abbott scored 16 points and Craig Clemson had a double-double for Maplewood.
Don Morrison added 15 points for the Rockets, while Clemson finished with 10 points and 16 rebounds. Royce Magdych had four assists.
Maplewood (9-5, 8-1 Northeastern Athletic Conference) led 32-23 at halftime.
Eric Simpson scored 11 points for Bloomfield (1-13, 1-9) and R.J. Gorman added 10.
