DISC GOLF 'Ice Bowl' tournament to benefit Salvation Army

The local course was built by volunteers in 1996.
CHAMPION -- The eighth annual "Ice Bowl" disc golf tournament will be Feb. 5 at Clarence Darrow Park, to collect canned goods and money for the Salvation Army.
Registration for the two-round event begins at 9 a.m. with the players meeting at 10 a.m. at the park (Young's Run Disc Golf Course).
The entry fee is $10 plus two canned goods; the goods and $5 of the entry fee go to the Salvation Army. The remainder is put toward prizes, explained tournament director Bill Flynn of Warren, Trumbull County Metroparks Commission chairman.
Disc golf is similar to ball golf, but instead of clubs and balls, disc golfers throw specialized discs similar to Frisbees. These go into a special metal basket and chain assembly that catches the disc, acting as "the hole."
Disc golf is gaining in popularity at more than 1,800 courses in the United States and 49 courses in Ohio, organizers said.
Local course
Young's Run, the local course, was built by volunteers in 1996 with financial help from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. It was the 14th course built in Ohio and 670th in the nation.
The Ice Bowl is part of a national effort promoted by Disc Golf World News, the sport's leading magazine. Local event organizers are encouraged to support a local charity.
Over the last eight years more than $1,500 and 1,200 pounds of canned goods have been donated to the local Salvation Army.
The course is located across Educational Highway from Kent State University Trumbull Campus. Golf discs are available for $8 at Overholt's Pharmacy.
Spectators and additional donations to the event are welcome.
