Cancer program approved
FARRELL, Pa. -- The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons has granted approval to UPMC Horizon's cancer program, which is available at both the Shenango Valley and Greenville campuses. The program received a full three-year approval with no deficiencies.
Stroke class
YOUNGSTOWN -- Living with Stroke is a class for stroke survivors and care givers. The class is every Tuesday and Thursday, 6:15-7 p.m., at Hillside Rehab Hospital, Feb. 1, 3, 8 and 10. The class is divided into four sessions, covering topics from causes and types of stroke, bowel and bladder care, nutrition, medications, caregiver needs and support and much more. Wellness meeting

Hot line volunteers
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- AWARE, Mercer County's Center Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, needs hot line volunteers.
An informational meeting will be held at the Womancare Center of UPMC/Horizon at 6 p.m. Thursday. Call the volunteer coordinator at (724) 662-1870 for more information.
Weight loss surgery
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- The UPMC Horizon Bariatric Center will hold a free informational session on weight loss surgery from 6 to 7 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Womancare Center of UPMC Horizon. If diet and exercise have not worked in the past and weight loss surgery may be an option, this session can help you make a decision.
If you would like to speak with someone who has gone through the surgery, please stay for our Weight Loss Surgery Support Group, which immediately follows this session at 7 p.m.

Kiddie lit awards
The Caldecott Medal for best picture book went to "Kitten's First Full Moon" by Kevin Henkes -- a simple story of a kitten who mistakes the moon for a bowl of milk.
The Newbery Medal, awarded to the best book for older children, was given to "Kira-Kira" by Cynthia Kadohata.
