Broadway show 'Hairspray' opening in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Another Broadway show is heading west.
This time, it's the musical "Hairspray," the eight-time Tony Award winner that will move into its own theater at the Luxor hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip.
"This is a big one," show producer Myron Martin told The Associated Press on Thursday. "This is such a beautiful fit for Vegas."
"Hairspray" is slated to open in late November at the pyramid-shaped Luxor, Martin said. The original will remain in New York City.
The production will cost about $12 million, Martin said.
A spot opened up at the Luxor after the Blue Man Group decided to move up the street to The Venetian mega-resort. The deal had been in the works for about a year, Martin said.
The Las Vegas version of "Hairspray" will be a 90-minute, intermission-less version of the show. The Broadway production runs more than two hours.
After the Luxor theater is renovated, it will hold 1,550 people, Martin said.
The show is a stage adaptation of John Waters' 1988 cult film, set in Baltimore, about a chubby girl who achieves her dream of dancing on a local sock-hop television show.
Martin said the show should appeal to Las Vegas audiences that are short on time and distracted by the many sights and sounds of the Strip.
