Frank Cardonto sign with Ashland
AUSTINTOWN -- Fitch High senior Frank Cardon will sign a national letter of intent to play football at Ashland University.
Cardon (6-foot-3, 255 pounds) was a two-year starter for the Falcons as a tight end and defensive end.
He was named first team Federal League, first team Northeast Ohio Inland District, and second team All-Ohio.
Julie Nemergutnamed to Top Ten
EDINBORO, Pa. -- Edinboro University junior Julie Nemergut, a graduate of South Range High, has been named to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Fall Top Ten.
The Top Ten Awards, selected by the PSAC's sports information directors, recognize student-athletes who distinguish themselves in the classroom and in competition.
To be a candidate for the Top Ten Awards, a student-athlete must have achieved a minimum of a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average and must be a starter or key reserve. Only student-athletes from the fall sports season are eligible for the Fall Top Ten Awards. The PSAC also sponsors winter and spring Top Ten awards.
Nemergut is a special-education major with a 3.87 GPA. She led the Edinboro cross country team to a second-place finish at the NCAA Division II national championships, its best performance ever. Nemergut earned All-American honors with a fifth-place finish, crossing in a time of 21:59.7.
Her performance at nationals capped a dominating postseason campaign, as she won both the PSAC Championships and the East Regional individual titles. Her winning time in the PSACs was 22:06, and she finished 14 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor at the East Regional meet with a time of 20:29. Edinboro finished first in both events.
Nemergut was later named the PSAC Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year. She also was named an Academic All-America by the National Track & amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The junior previously earned All-America honors at the 2004 NCAA Division II championships with an eighth-place finish in the 10,000 meters. She is a three-time Coaches Association Academic All-American, in addition to earning All-PSAC honors in cross country twice and All-Region accolades all three years.
Jr. Phantoms win
The Youngstown Jr. Phantoms bantam team won a scrimmage against Quigly High's freshman team, 8-3.
Scoring for the Phantoms were Ryan Taylor with two goals, while Steve Cornich, Jim Lacko, Don Super, Jay Young, John Vanasdale, & amp; Ryan Rinko each scored one.
Rinko also had three assists, with Young, Taylor, Vanasdale and Devrim Olgun each getting two assists. Lacko, Cornich and Brendan Sinchak had one each.
Jonathan Welsh had 14 stops in goal.
The Jr. Phantoms resume regular-season play this weekend, and will try to add to their nine-game unbeaten streak with games Saturday against Mentor at home and Sunday at Akron-Canton.
MUB team wins
BOARDMAN -- The Mooney/Ursuline/Boardman club hockey team defeated Nordonia 7-0 Wednesday at The Ice Zone in a North Coast Hockey League game.
MUB goalie John Yuhaniak stopped 38 shots.
Brendan Sinchak scored MUB's first two goals on assists by David Graham.
Graham had one goal and three assists. Jake Secich also had two goals for MUB. Other MUB goals were scored by Alex Taylor and Mike Madsen. Brady Hankinson, Keith Hobbs and Madsen also had assists.
MUB (4-4-1) plays Massillon Jackson at the Airport Ice Arena at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Larkin loyal to Reds
CINCINNATI -- Barry Larkin's loyalty is nudging him toward retirement.
The All-Star shortstop would like to play another season, but can't commit himself to play for anyone other than his hometown team. He has spent his entire career with the Cincinnati Reds, who rejected his overtures to return for a 20th season.
Larkin said Thursday he has turned down offers to start for other teams because he can't envision himself playing for anyone but the Reds.
"I thought eventually I'd be able to say, yeah, I can do this," Larkin told The Associated Press in a phone interview from his home in Orlando, Fla. "But I'm big on loyalty. I couldn't come to grips with making a 100 percent commitment (to another team)."
Larkin, 40, batted .289 in 111 games last season and was chosen for his 12th All-Star team.
Palmer ties the knot
KAHUKU, Hawaii -- At age 75, Arnold Palmer feels like a kid again after saying, "I do."
Palmer married fiancee Kathleen Gawthrop in an intimate beachside ceremony on Oahu's North Shore.
"I feel like a 25-year-old," he said Thursday.
The couple exchanged vows Wednesday in a beach cottage near the Arnold Palmer Course at the Turtle Bay Resort, where Palmer will play at this weekend's Champions Tour event.
The 62-time PGA Tour winner was married once before. His wife of 45 years, Winnie, died in 1999.
Gawthrop, of Tiburon, Calif., has three children and five grandchildren.
Palmer has two daughters and seven grandchildren.
