HORIZON LEAGUE YSU men are 3-16, lose to Loyola

CHICAGO -- Youngstown State sophomore guard Quin Humphrey scored a game-high 20 points, but Loyola of Chicago used a big run to end the first half and open the second, grabbing control and eventually earning a 71-50 victory over the Penguins Wednesday night at the Gentile Center.
Youngstown State (3-16, 1-8 Horizon League) trailed 12-0 at the game's outset, but battled back, pulling to within 17-14 on a 3-pointer by Zach Silverman with 9:15 remaining in the half.
However, Loyola (6-13, 4-5) outscored the Penguins 17-5 the rest of the half to go into the locker room with a 34-19 advantage.
"We got it to three," said Youngstown State coach John Robic, "and we had chances. The ball just didn't go in the basket."
Second half start
The Ramblers opened up the second half just as they began the first -- with a big run.
Loyola scored the first nine points while YSU did not score until John Barber made a free throw at the 15:16 mark.
Humphrey, who had 26 points in YSU's win over Loyola earlier this year, was 8-of-12 from the field and made three 3-pointers.
"Quin tries too hard," said Robic, "and his turnovers sometimes are forced. But, he stood out to me tonight."
Silverman finished with 10 points as the only other Penguin finishing with double figures.
Brian Radakovich had his double-figure scoring game streak snapped at six, but grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Top Ramblers
Leading the way for the Ramblers were Anthony Smith and DaJuan Gouard, who both had 14 points. Blake Shilb added 11 for Loyola while Majak Kou contributed 10.
"Loyola was a much better team tonight than when we played them before," said Robic.
For the game, Loyola shot 51.9 percent making 27-of-52 shots while YSU finished with a shooting percentage of 40 (18-of-45). YSU committed 25 turnovers, playing without point guard Jon Mends, who did not make the trip because of a sprained foot.
"We struggled handling the ball," said Robic. "Twenty-five turnovers is inexcusable."
The Penguins will get some time off before returning to the court at Beeghly Center later next week. YSU does not play this weekend for the first time all season and resumes Horizon League action next Thursday at home against Detroit.
