'Foreigner' at Oakland
YOUNGSTOWN -- A band of veteran local actors will take the stage in "The Foreigner" at Oakland Center for the Arts this weekend. Directed by Joanne Carney Smith, the play features Michael Morley, Ed Smith, Lorraine Stanfar, Jane Hill, Eddie Walsh, Jamie Deeley and Tom O'Donnell.
Performances will be 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 4-5 and Feb. 11-12; and 2 p.m. Sunday. For reservations, contact the Oakland at (330) 746-0404.

Musical trio
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Artemis Trio, a recently formed chamber group of young musicians, will perform at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 6 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, One Trinity Place.
Violinist Sara Rule Schaft, cellist Ivy Chen and pianist Caroline Oltmanns comprise the trio. Each has extensive experience with orchestras, with Chen and Oltmanns having had international experience.
The concert will include Beethoven's Sonata for Violin and Piano, opus 24, and Schubert's Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello, opus 99.

First Wednesday event
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Children's Museum of the Valley will feature Youngstown Reads Early AmeriCorps 5-8 p.m. Wednesday.
AmeriCorps will read stories and do related crafts with kids on this admission-free night.
The museum is located at 139 E. Boardman St.
After hearing stories by AmeriCorps volunteers about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, children will make flag magnets and "Honest Abe's hat." Valentine's Day stories and crafts will also provide children with fun opportunities to engage in hands-on learning.
These activities and admission to the museum are free to Valley caregivers and children.
The museum allows children to explore and interact with exhibits that encourage play and lifelong learning.

Art exhibit
CLEVELAND -- Cleveland State University is hosting an art exhibit, "I Grew Up With the Dead," by mixed-media artist Margaret Rutherford in Gallery C. through Feb. 12.
Rutherford says that 57 of the 63 members of her mother's family were killed by the Nazis during World War II. "My mother survived the occupation of Budapest, Hungary. In 'I Grew Up With the Dead,' I chronicle, through poems and images, my experience of growing up in a home permeated by my mother's loss and trauma."

Jazz festival
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Directors Dr. Keith Winking of Texas State University and Dr. David Glover, assistant professor of music at Slippery Rock University, will put music students from 10 regional high schools through their paces during the Pennsylvania Music Education Association's District 5 Jazz Festival this weekend on the Slippery Rock campus. Events will include a public performance at 2 p.m. Saturday at Swope Music Hall. Concert admission is $3.
SRU has hosted the festival for high school jazz musicians since 1997 under the direction of Dr. Stephen Hawk, SRU associate professor of music. This year's participants from Lawrence and Mercer counties are: Will Weltman, John Anthony and Jim Weltman of Mohawk, Greg Moose of Wilmington and J.P. Scahga of Kennedy Catholic.
