AREA Salem topples Canfield in MAC



Tommy Jesko, Tyler Pierce and Jarin Heath combined for 39 points.
CANFIELD -- Tommy Jesko scored 17 points, leading Salem High to a 49-40 victory over Canfield in a boys Metro Athletic Conference basketball game Tuesday night.
Jesko scored seven points in the first quarter and six in the fourth, as the Quakers (6-7, 4-4 MAC) pulled away in the second half. Canfield (9-5, 5-3) led 18-17 at halftime, but Salem outscored the Quakers 15-7 in the third quarter.
Tyler Pierce and Jarin Heath added 11 points each for Salem. Pierce also led the Quakers with six rebounds.
Sean Baker scored 14 points for Canfield. Mike Rounsavall had seven rebounds.
Poland 84, Niles 69, OT
POLAND -- The MAC-leading Bulldogs were pushed by Niles, but outscored the Red Dragons 18-3 in the extra period.
Jim Shurilla scored 20 points for Poland (12-1, 8-0 MAC), which led 49-42 entering the fourth period. Chad Fender added 17 points, while Luke Blangero scored 16 and Erik Carlson had 10.
Niles (7-7, 3-5) was led by Andrew Cleary, who scored 19 points. Justin Allen added 14, while Bill Frech had 13, Joe Razzano had 12 and Jake Schimley 11.
The Red Dragons led 21-14 after one period.
Alliance 67, West Branch 47
BELOIT -- Bylynn Hatcher scored 19 points for Alliance in a nonconference win.
DaRon Taylor added 11 points for the Aviators (9-4), who led only 32-29 at halftime but outscored West Branch 17-2 in the third period.
Mark Garner finished with 10 points for Alliance.
West Branch (5-9) was led by Marc Carle, with 12 points. Jared Hoffman and Brandon McMillan added seven rebounds each, and Andy Pappas had five assists.
Rayen 77, Chaney 35
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dominique Crosby scored 23 points to lead Rayen in a City Series game.
The Tigers jumped out to a fast lead, holding a 27-14 advantage after one quarter and a 48-19 edge at halftime.
Odell Eargle added 16 points for Rayen (8-6, 4-1 City).
Chaney (2-11, 2-3) was led by Glenn Brown's eight points.
Wilson 82, Beaver Local 49
YOUNGSTOWN -- Justin Maxwell scored 16 points to lead Wilson in a nonleague game.
William Johnson added 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for the Redmen (3-12). Keith Tubbs scored 12 points, and Bert Pritchard and Derrick Maddox had 11 apiece.
Beaver Local (7-10) was led by Ryan Lynch, with 12 points, and Kelsey Hendrick, with 11.
Youngstown Christian 78,Warren Christian 67
WARREN -- Aaron Agresta scored a career-high 32 points to lead Youngstown Christian.
Agresta also had seven steals for the Eagles (6-8). Stephen Setnick added 12 points, while Jared VanArsdale and Dominic Vitullo scored 11 points each. VanArsdale also had nine rebounds.
Akron Hoban 82, Mooney 56
AKRON -- Mooney hung tough with state-ranked Hoban for three quarters.
The Cardinals (2-12) trailed only 35-32 at halftime and 56-49 after three periods, but the Knights (11-3) outscored them 26-7 in the fourth quarter.
Jaron Howell scored 20 points for Mooney and L.J. Sutton added 10.
Hoban's John Wolosinczuk tossed in 24 points, while Drew Sprungle and Chris Stasik added 14 each.
Springfield 57, Jackson-Milton 48
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Zack DeJane finished with 18 points, four rebounds and three steals to lead Springfield in an Inter-County League game.
Aaron Wood added 13 points for the Tigers (10-3, 6-1 ICL), while Andrew Schuler had nine points and nine rebounds, and Mason McCambridge had four assists.
Jackson-Milton (5-10, 1-6) was led by Mark Balent, who scored 29 points, and Andrew Whitmer, who had eight points and four assists.
Western Reserve 53, Lowellville 48
BERLIN CENTER -- The Blue Devils led 29-14 at halftime, then held off a big Lowellville rally in the third quarter.
Dave Ferrando scored 18 points for Western Reserve (6-8, 4-3 ICL), while Joe Petro added 17.
Lowellville (9-7, 4-4) outscored the Blue Devils 22-11 in the third period. Vince Broll scored 16 points and John Wilaj added 11.
