Woman sues sheriff's dept. over fall on ice

WARREN -- The Trumbull County Sheriff's Department faces a lawsuit from a woman who says she slipped on ice while handcuffed on the way from court.
Vanessa Mallory of Burton Street, Warren, filed suit in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court against the department and six deputies. She seeks at least $25,000.
No one from the sheriff's department could be reached Monday afternoon to comment on the litigation.
According to the lawsuit, Mallory was in the custody of the sheriff's department Jan, 23, 2003, and being taken on foot from the county courthouse to the jail. Charges were not specified.
She was restrained in handcuffs and being taken across High Street.
At this point, she alleges, the deputies didn't provide adequate support. Her foot came in contact with ice and snow on the road and she fell "due to the negligent and careless conduct" of two of the deputies.
She says in the lawsuit that her injuries are permanent and require continuing care, and that she's lost time at work. She says the department is negligent in its training "in the proper transport of prisoners to and from the jail."
In the lawsuit, all of the deputies are "John Doe" except deputy Roosevelt Hill.
The case is assigned to Judge W. Wyatt McKay and a jury trial is sought.
