Weathersfield grant meeting set
McKINLEY HEIGHTS -- A second meeting where residents can tell county and local officials what improvements their neighborhoods need will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 2 at the McKinley Heights Fire Station, 2229 Gardenland Ave.
Weathersfield Township is working to help the Trumbull County Planning Commission obtain a $300,000 federal Community Development Block Grant for the area of Harmon, Garfield, Bellwood and Ridgewood avenues and U.S. Route 422.
The county is expected to apply for the grant in June or July.
Residents' attendance at the meetings is among ways to earn "points," which will be tallied in the competitive grant-seeking process.
Township administrator David Pugh said the grant is designed to improve services in the neighborhood.
If the grant is approved, among projects being considered is giving homeowners money to make home repairs like replacing windows or siding.
Other planned uses of the funds are for demolition of condemned houses and work on storm sewers to increase their capacity. Pugh said some storm sewers have collapsed in the area.
In addition, he said the township may want to install new fire hydrants, because a lot of the hydrants in the neighborhood are 50 to 60 years old, the age when they start to have problems.
Other meetings are planned for March 8 and April 7, both at the McKinley Heights Fire Station.
