Liberty survives scare from Tigers



Cornwell scored five points in overtime as Leopards remained perfect in TAC.
LIBERTY -- Liberty High remained unbeaten in the Trumbull Athletic Conference, but it wasn't easy.
Brandon Cornwell scored 18 points, including five in overtime, as the Leopards edged Newton Falls, 53-51, Friday night.
Liberty (9-3, 6-0 TAC) trailed 30-28 at the end of the third quarter and 41-38 with less than a minute to go in regulation.
Donovan Fletcher made a pair of free throws with 58 seconds to go to close the gap to one. After Ryan Romack split a pair of free throws for the Tigers, John Humphrey made his only basket of the game with 26 seconds remaining to tie the score.
Humphrey was also fouled on the play, but he missed the free throw.
In the extra session, Newton Falls (6-6, 3-3) again led by two points, 49-47, with a minute remaining.
Cornwell then scored and was fouled, and his free throw with 55.6 seconds to go gave the Leopards a 50-49 lead. Fletcher added two free throws with 45 seconds remaining.
Chad Rankin's basket with 19.6 seconds to play made it 52-51, but Rankin missed a free throw to tie the score.
Fletcher added a free throw with 15 seconds for the final margin.
Edward Kershaw added 14 points and 13 rebounds for Liberty. Mychal Doblanski had 10 rebounds.
Eric Medallis scored 18 points for the Tigers. Rankin finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Hubbard 53, Brookfield 43
HUBBARD -- Dave Ward scored 17 points to lead Hubbard to its second win.
The Eagles held a 39-35 lead after three quarters, then Ward scored seven points, on a 3-pointer and a 4-for-4 performance at the foul line, in the final eight minutes.
Frankile Rosile and Marc Kametsky added 11 points each for Hubbard (2-9, 1-5 TAC).
Brookfield (6-6, 1-5) was led by Taylor McMullin with 11 points, and Sam King with 10.
