CAMPBELL -- Latraiel R. Alexander, 48, of Youngstown was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide Thursday in an accident that killed her sister Jorita Alexander, 49.
Alexander is scheduled to appear Tuesday in Campbell Municipal Court to face drunken driving and homicide charges, said City Prosecutor Brian Macala.
Police allege that Latraiel Alexander was intoxicated when she crashed her speeding car into a utility pole along Wilson Avenue about 1:20 a.m. Tuesday.
A coroner pronounced Jorita Alexander, a passenger in the car, dead at the scene. Police said Latraiel Alexander's blood alcohol level was 0.235, nearly three times the Ohio legal limit to drive, according to police reports.
911 trouble in Warren
WARREN -- Warren Police Department is having intermittent trouble with computers in its 911 answering center, but people dialing 911 still will get service, a spokesman said Thursday.
The problem can cause a delay in answering, and if the city's equipment doesn't respond a call will roll over to the Trumbull County 911 Center, he said.
Warren generally does its own 911 dispatching. Sprint, the phone service provider, is aware of the situation and officials hope to have it resolved by today, he said.
Fortune gets petitions
YOUNGSTOWN -- City Council President James E. Fortune Sr. picked up petitions Thursday to run for mayor. Fortune has more than 23 years of experience in city government, having served as a 6th Ward councilman for several years. He also is a member of the Coalition of City Council Presidents, whose goal is to improve the county's economic conditions. The filing deadline for partisan races for the May primary is Feb. 17.
New fire station
LAKE MILTON -- Township trustees were told this week that the new fire station, behind the township building at 15990 Milton Ave, is completed. Phone lines and utilities have been set up, and an open house is forthcoming, although no date has been set.
Shots fired at house
WARREN -- A 45-year-old man told police someone shot at his residence at 149 Delaware Ave. N.W. Police said as many as nine rounds were fired at the house shortly after 2 a.m. Wednesday.
Pizza deliverer is robbed
WARREN -- A 19-year-old woman delivering for Pizza Hut told police that two men with handguns robbed her in the 800 block of Prospect Avenue N.W. about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.
New Neshannock planner
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Neshannock Township supervisors appointed Ed Badger to the township planning commission.
He will serve the two years remaining in the four-year term of James Tervo, who resigned because of health reasons.
Badger, a 14-year resident of the township and a retired Shenango Area School teacher, has been regularly attending the supervisor meetings for the past five years.
"I did not start coming to the meetings to get appointed to a position, & quot; Badger said. "I just wanted to learn what was going on. & quot;
Supervisor John DiCola Jr. said, "We wanted someone who took an interest in the community."
In other business at their recent meeting, supervisors opened the eight bids received for the Cochran Drive culvert replacement. The culvert was damaged during the 2003 floods.
Graziani Construction of New Castle was the apparent low bidder at $44,755. The highest bidder was Mortimers Excavating of Pulaski with a bid of $76,998. Supervisors referred the bids to township engineer Ross Taylor for review.
Prep Bowls scheduled
CHAMPION -- Three academic competitions are set next week at the Trumbull Career & amp; Technical Center, sponsored by the Trumbull County Educational Service Center:
UAn elementary Prep Bowl will be at the center from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday.
UA junior high Prep Bowl will be at the center from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
UA junior high Prep Bowl will be at the center from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Prep Bowl is an academic competition in which pupils in various grade levels answer questions from all areas of study.
