NEW WILMINGTON - Any way you look at it, it was anything but a classic basketball game Wednesday night at Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.
But it turned out to be a nice win for Westminster (11-4, 2-0) as the Titans outran the Thiel Tomcats (4-13, 0-2), 56-33, in a President's Athletic Conference game.
"The kids did a good job of hustling," said Titans coach Rosanne Scott. "I told the kids that we can't predict when our shots are going to go in and when they are not so they have to keep hustling to make things happen."
The Titans scored the first 14 points of the game, holding Thiel scoreless until Heather Abate made 1-of-2 at the foul line with 6 1/2 minutes remaining in the first half.
Defense makes up for shooting
The Titans shot 31 percent from the floor, but they were playing an aggressive man-to-man defense from the opening tip, causing a dozen turnovers and forcing Thiel to miss its first 18 shots.
"They [the Titans] played hard, tough defense for 40 minutes and as a result, they created 24 turnovers," Scott said. "That was the key to allow us to keep that margin throughout the game."
Thiel scored its first six points at the foul line before Kristen Benjamin hit a 12-foot jumper for Thiel's only field goal of the opening half with less than two minutes to play.
"We have been focusing on playing good defense as we got ready for conference play and these kids take a lot of pride in their defense and it shows," said Scott.
Maintaining its 14-point lead two minutes into the second half, the Titans went on a 14-3 run to open up a 25-point lead (42-17) and they never looked back.
Leading the Titans to their fourth consecutive win was Mary Jane Eaton with 10 points. Four other Titans scored at least seven points.
"In the past couple of games, teams have been trying to key on Erica [Tallo] and Desiree [Sterling] so everybody has been stepping it up for us," said Scott. "We are playing together as a team and that is also a reason why we had 17 assists for the game."
Rayen School graduate Cherrell Triplett scored seven points and had seven rebounds in eight minutes.
"She is a young player who is still maturing," said Scott of Triplett. "She is still very raw in some aspects of the game, but she is working real hard and we are working on a lot of things with her. "
"She has been coming in to give us a spark, especially on the boards. We keep telling her that nobody can box her out because she can outjump everybody who plays against her and if she believes that and continues to work hard, she is going to develop into a good player."
For Thiel, Kristen Benjamin scored 10 points in 23 minutes.
