PREP BASKETBALL Lakeview led by surprise scorer

Mackiewicz scored a career-high 33 points to lead the Bulldogs over LaBrae.
CORTLAND -- The rivalry between LaBrae and Lakeview has always been a fiery one and Tuesday night at the Lakeview gym, in a key Trumbull Athletic Conference game, it was even more so.
The difference in Tuesday's contest was Lakeview's 6-foot-2 junior, Eddie Mackiewicz, who had a career-high 33 points to lead his team to a 77-50 victory.
Mackiewicz scored 18 points in the second half for the Bulldogs (9-4, 4-1 TAC), who led 31-29 at the intermission.
Early confidence
Mackiewicz, who wasn't sure if his previous career high was 12 or 15 points, was 7-of-9 on 3-pointers.
"We have been lacking a little on offense and somebody had to step up," Mackiewicz said. "It was just a good night, a really good night and as soon as I hit the first 3, I knew it was going to be a good night."
Todd Rowan, LaBrae's top scorer this season with a 16-point average, scored his only field goal of the game and followed it with a free throw to cut Lakeview's lead to 39-34 with 3:30 remaining in the third quarter.
From that point Lakeview outscored the Vikings, 38-16. Mackiewicz and Trevor Mathews made 3-pointers to key an 11-1 run for the Bulldogs that put them ahead 50-35.
"We tell our guys to shoot when they are open," said Lakeview coach Larry Herrholtz. "Eddie was open and, wow, did he ever shoot."
Lakeview (9-4, 4-1) was 24-of-47 from the floor; LaBrae was 17-of-46. The Bulldogs held a 33-22 edge in rebounds.
Alex Koltsov pulled down eight rebounds for Lakeview and Mathews had six assists and finished with 13 points.
Jimmy Kittle and Todd Rowan had six rebounds each for the Vikings. Jason Frederick, who came into the game averaging 14 points, had 18 in the first half and finished the game with 24.
Mathews added 13 points for Lakeview the teams combined for 17 turnovers.
Exciting first half
"We didn't do the things we had to do to win," said LaBrae coach Gregg Isler. "We didn't execute very well on offense and were beaten in every aspect of the game."
The first half featured 10 lead changes and three ties. The last lead change came right at the buzzer to end the second quarter, when Lakeview's Dustin Opalka tossed in a shot from beyond midcourt, giving the Bulldogs a 31-29 lead.
"I was a little worried in the first half when we ran into foul trouble, but our bench picked us up," said Herrholtz. "[With] this being a physical game, we had to pressure their guards."
The coach credited Alex Koltsov and Mike Frangiamore with leading the way defensively for the Bulldogs.
