Fight ends in shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- An argument at a party in the 1300 block of Atkinson Avenue late Saturday resulted in a struggle over a shotgun, and Alvin S. Ray, 21, of Rosewood Avenue, being shot in the front of his lower left leg, police said. Witnesses at the party told police that two women were arguing and Ray stepped in when one of the women retrieved the shotgun. The woman who grabbed the shotgun was not at the house when police arrived. The case was turned over to detectives.
Rape charge filed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A statutory rape was reported to police by the mother of a 14-year-old Idlewood Avenue girl who found out that her daughter is 10 weeks pregnant. The suspect is a 20-year-old man. The teenager told police that she was not forced to have sex. The report was turned over to the juvenile division.
Fracas at bar
YOUNGSTOWN -- Patrons removed Christopher M. Bonacci, 33, of North BonAir Avenue from the East Side Civics Bar on South Avenue, and then he punched out a window in an attempt to get back inside around 11 p.m. Saturday, the owner told police. When officers arrived, Bonacci was bleeding heavily from his hand and arguing with another man, whom he punched in the head, police said. The man punched Bonacci back, knocking him unconscious. Bonacci was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment. He was issued a court summons on charges of aggravated trespass, criminal damaging and assault. Bonacci is a former city police officer who resigned in November 2003.
Summit to be televised
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Lawrence County Community Crime Summit hosted by Lawrence County District Attorney Matthew T. Mangino will be broadcast by Adelphia on Local Cable Channel 10.
The Community Crime Summit was conducted Oct. 21 at Jameson Health System South Campus. It featured keynote speaker Laurie O. Robinson, former Pennsylvania assistant attorney general, as well as, a panel discussion featuring Dr. Alfred Blumstein of Carnegie Mellon University, Carl J. Anderson, director of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, Joe Markiewicz of Communities that Care, and Elliot McLean of the U.S. attorney's office. Workshop to be held
BOARDMAN -- The Ohio Department of Public Safety will have a workshop on compliance laws related to liquor permits at 1 p.m. Feb. 24 in the Boardman Government Center, Marie Debartolo Room, 8299 Market St.
The workshop will be conducted by Bill Wedeking of the Ohio Investigative Unit of the Department of Public Safety and is sponsored by Mahoning Safe Communities, the District Board of Health and Boardman Township. Presentation planned
CANFIELD -- The next public presentation of Canfield Foundation and Canfield Vision Plan Steering Committee will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 25 at the McMahon Hall at the Mill Creek Metroparks Farm on state Route 46. Dr. Jim Segedy, Urban Planner and Vision Plan director from Ball State University, will lead the presentation. YOUNGSTOWN -- City council's finance committee meeting and council meeting for Wednesday have been canceled. The council's next meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 26.
Volunteers sought
The Ohio Volunteer Medical Response Corps is seeking volunteers. The corps is a group of licensed health-care professionals, pre-identified and willing to respond to an Ohio disaster or terrorist event. Participants include physician/psychiatrists, physician assistants, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy interns, psychologists, licensed independent social workers, licensed independent clinical counselors, dentists and emergency medical service professionals.
