SOMETHING TO BUILD ON Steel arrives at downtown construction site

The company has 12 weeks to get the work done.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The structural steel for the Youngstown Convocation Center finally arrived Wednesday, thanks in part to good weather that allowed haulers to bring it from Columbus.
Large trucks laden with steel rolled into downtown Youngstown at the site of the $42 million center, which is being built between the Market Street and South Avenue bridges.
Shaquela Jones, the center's marketing coordinator, said Ohio Steel Industries of Columbus provided the steel, and subcontractor Kelley Steel of Cleveland brought it here and will erect it.
Crews have begun erecting the steel. Kelley will have 12 weeks to get the steel put up, Jones said.
Bob Terpak, project manager for Ohio Steel, said last week that if the weather in Columbus and Youngstown settled down, the steel would arrive by the middle of this week.
The steel originally was set to arrive here in mid-December, with installation taking place this month and in February.
Weather's impact
Columbus, however, was hard hit by major snow and ice storms, shutting down power in that city and affecting Ohio Steel's operations, so the steel did not come in December.
Also, the roads between Columbus and Youngstown were hazardous because of the snow and ice storms, and Ohio Steel did now want to risk injury to drivers who were bringing the steel to Youngstown.
Ohio Steel was awarded the $3.63 million structural steel contract last year.
