Bush invites McKelvey
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mayor George M. McKelvey said he has been invited to attend the inauguration of President Bush next week. The mayor, however, said he hasn't decided if he'll go to Washington for the festivities Jan. 20.
"I have been invited, but I'm going to leave my sources unnamed" as to who extended him the invitation, McKelvey said Wednesday.
The mayor, a Democrat, backed the Republican president early in his re-election bid last year. McKelvey appeared with the president when he made an appearance in Youngstown at the Youngstown Community Health Center on Wick Avenue, and he introduced the president during his campaign stop last fall at Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna.
Poland Twp. reorganizes
POLAND -- Robert J. Lidle Jr. was elevated to president and Annette Jeswald-DiVito elected to his old post of vice chairman at Tuesday's reorganization meeting of the township board of trustees.
Former chairman Mark Naples is the third trustee.
The township's part-time administrator, Jim Scharville, was among the nonbargaining unit employees to receive 2.4 percent raises, pushing his pay to $23.04 a hour. Scharville said he usually works about 20-25 hours per week.
The board's 2005 meetings will be at 5 p.m. the second Tuesday of the month in the township hall.
Reese to lead Canfield
CANFIELD -- Canfield Township trustees chose a new chairman during their reorganizational session.
Bill Reese, who was vice chairman during 2004, will take over the top post for the board this year. Paul Moracco, who was chairman during the past year, was voted in as vice-chairman for 2005. The third trustee is Judy Bayus.
The board also agreed to meet on the second and fourth Mondays of the month during the year.
Fagnano is board chief
NEW MIDDLETOWN-- The Springfield Local Board of Education appointed member Len Fagnano board president. The board, at its annual reorganization meeting, also named Max Heinl vice president. The board agreed to continue conducting its regular meetings at 8 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month. That meeting is to be preceded by a public caucus at 7 p.m. The meetings will be in the intermediate school auditorium.
Witmer to lead at Range
NORTH LIMA -- The South Range Local Board of Education has elected Mark Witmer president of the board.
The board also named Marilyn Weaver vice president at its annual reorganization meeting this week.
The board set its regular business meeting the third Tuesday of each month February through April and the third Monday of each month May through December. Meetings are to begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be conducted at the middle school in Greenford in February, April, June, August, October and December and at the high school in North Lima in March, May, July, September and November.
Two Warren robberies
WARREN -- Society Cleaners, 1658 Elm Road N.E., told police Tuesday that someone broke a window there, then reached in and took two small vending machines. Also Tuesday, the BP gas station at 1290 E. Market St. reported that someone took nine propane tanks from the business, with a total value of $500.
Educational classes set
WARREN -- Central Christian Church, 2051 E. Market St., is offering a midweek dining and educational program Thursday evenings for 10 weeks, starting today. A light supper is available for $5 per person ($3 under age 12) beginning at 5:45 p.m. Classes are from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and are: gourmet cooking, financial planning for young adults, finding the message in popular movies and computer training. There is no charge for classes, though participants may be asked to bring ingredients for the cooking class. Activities also are available for children and youths.
