AREA COLLEGES Allegheny wins on late basket



Matt Majzlik made a shot with 10 seconds remaining for the Gators.
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Matt Majzlik and Bill Babe each scored career-highs and the Allegheny College men's basketball team shot 76 percent in the second half in a 92-91 victory over Hiram on Wednesday night.
Majzlik scored the winning points with 10 seconds remaining.
He went 12-of-16 and finished with 29 points.
Majzlik also had six rebounds, as did Casey McCloskey, who scored 23 points, and had seven assists and three steals.
Babe finished with 24 points and Justin Schmitt had six assists for the Gators (5-8, 2-3 North Coast Athletic Conference).
Carlton Dean led Hiram (2-12, 1-4) with 29 points and nine rebounds, and DaJuan Whiteside added 16 points and nine boards.
Mount Union 112, Marietta 96
ALLIANCE -- Mount Union shot 60 percent from the floor (39-of-65) to reach the .500 mark.
Kyle Karpinski led the Purple Raiders (7-7, 3-4 Ohio Athletic Conference) with 33 points.
Jason Smith scored 19 points and Josh Long 16. Chris Blakely had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Clay Sanders (Rayen) had nine points and 10 assists.
California (Pa.) 75,Slippery Rock 62
CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- Bill Johnson scored 23 points, and Glenn Reepmeyer had 15 points and seven rebounds, to lead Slippery Rock (1-13). Mason Glick dished out eight assists.
Sharif Bray led California (10-3) with 22 points and seven assists. Boris Mesnager added 19 points and six rebounds. London Houston finished with 12 points.
Women
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Grove City's late rally fell short as Rachel Romance's potential game-winning shot as time expired fell short in a 52-51 loss to Penn State Behrend. The Wolverines trailed by 12 points with 1:50 remaining before rallying.
Romance, Jocelyn Kempema and Shannon Overdorff each scored 11 points for the Wolverines (7-6). Romance also had a career-high nine steals and five rebounds.
Tenesha Eden led Penn State Behrend (6-5) with 21 points and nine rebounds.
Marietta 76, Mount Union 64
MARIETTA -- Rebecca Tokodi scored 22 points to lead Marietta, and Justine Pagenhardt added a career-high 20.
Abby Hess had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Pioneers (4-8, 2-5 Ohio Athletic Conference).
Mount Union (3-11, 0-7) was led by Ashley Bourdeau, who scored a game-high 27 points. Tana Keller added nine points and nine rebounds, and Kyle Hogan had seven assists.
Wooster 71, Hiram 68
HIRAM -- Wooster sank two free throws in the final 40 seconds to pull out the win in a game in which neither team led by more than eight points.
Amanda Hummel led the Terriers (6-7, 1-4 NCAC) with 21 points, four rebounds and four assists. Cassie Bedard added 16 points, and Valerie Goudy and Tania Carman had five rebounds each. Goudy also had five assists.
Allegheny 68, Oberlin 59
OBERLIN -- Katie Kestler tied a school record with seven 3-point goals for Allegheny (9-5, 2-4 North Coast Conference).
Kestler finished with a game- and career-high 21 points.
Caitlin Murtagh added 15 points.
Raelynn Miles had 11 points and four rebounds.
Bethany 82, Frostburg St. 77
FROSTBURG, Md. -- Jenny Place made three 3-pointers late in the game to help secure Bethany's win.
Place scored 17 points for the Bison (5-9). Nikki Babik scored team-high 20. Courtney Irwin and Katie Resanovich added 19 and 14 points, respectively.
California (Pa.) 67,Slippery Rock 41
CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- Megan Storck and Sara McKinney scored 14 points each to lead California (11-2).
Erin Dillon added 10 points for the Vulcans, and Lisa Gottuso had seven points and nine rebounds.
Stacey Green led Slippery Rock (5-9) with 15 points and eight rebounds.
