Activities to honor slain leader

A civil rights advocate from the 1950s will speak.
ALLIANCE -- Mount Union College is planning several events for Monday -- Martin Luther King Jr. Day -- to honor the life and work of the slain civil rights leader.
A convocation and awards ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at the Campus Grounds in the Hoover-Price Campus Center. The keynote speaker will be Minnijean Brown Trickey. Brown Trickey was one of a group of black teenagers known as the "Little Rock Nine." On Sept. 25, 1957, Brown Trickey faced down an angry mob and helped desegregate Central High School in Little Rock, Ark. She has since had a career as a crusader for civil rights. For her work, she has received the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor, the Wolf Award, the Spingarn Medal and many other citations and awards.
After the convocation, the annual Martin Luther King Jr. award presentation will be held. Awards are given to students, community members or Mount Union faculty and staff members whose actions best exemplify the spirit of King. Both the convocation and awards ceremony are free and open to the public.
An MLK Community Gathering, "Breaking Bread Together," will be held at 11:30 a.m. in the dining commons solarium of the Hoover-Price Campus Center. Reservations for the free luncheon may be made by calling (330) 823-7288.
A question-and-answer session with Brown Trickey will be held at 1:15 p.m. in the Alumni Room of the Hoover-Price Campus Center. This event is also free and open to the public.
