STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Plans for a Roman Catholic student center, which have already been approved by the State College borough zoning office, are being opposed by a neighborhood association.
Carolyn Kunz, the College Heights Association president, told the Zoning Hearing Board on Monday night that she was concerned about late-night traffic and noise, pedestrian traffic and the removal of three early 20th-century homes for the project.
The Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown sharply defended its plans, saying the building qualifies as a church and therefore is protected under borough guidelines.
Zoning in the neighborhood allows new churches, but not new student centers.
