YOUNGSTOWN -- Roughly $1,000 worth of meat and seafood were taken from Tokyo House on South Avenue by a thief who made a hole in the rear wall of the restaurant to gain entry, reports show. The owner discovered the break-in Monday afternoon. He also reported $100 worth of liquor and a TV were taken.
Boy triggers false alarm
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 15-year-old Cameron Avenue boy who witnesses saw activate a fire alarm Monday at Wilson High School was arrested on a charge of inducing panic and taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center. The school was evacuated when the alarm sounded. The witness said he saw the boy push a book into the fire alarm.
Vandals damaged cars
YOUNGSTOWN -- Five vehicles parked in the lot at U Save Auto, 975 Bears Den Road, were vandalized, the owner told police Monday. Windows were smashed and steering columns peeled. In older model vehicles, dismantling a steering column often allows a thief to start the engine.
Stop becomes drug bust
YOUNGSTOWN -- Aubrey Toney, 23, of West Judson Avenue was arrested on drug and traffic charges after being stopped by police Monday afternoon on Rush Boulevard for having no front license plate. Toney was charged with driving under suspension, drug-abuse crack cocaine, drug-abuse powdered cocaine, drug-abuse Percocet (narcotic painkiller) and no front plate. Police got a positive result in a field test for cocaine. Crack was found in a coat pocket and the Percocet pills and powdered cocaine in a napkin in the center console. Police also confiscated $567.
Cortland panel to meet
CORTLAND -- The Cortland Planning, Zoning and Building Commission will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at city hall. Among the agenda items are discussion of the sign for a new plaza owned by Joe DiVieste at 231 S. High St., owned by Joe DiVieste; signs for the Gourmet Connection Cyber Cafe at 231 W. Main and First Place bank at 325 S. High St.; and a sign for a new business, the Breakfast Spot 'n' More at 105 S. High St. The restaurant will have two to five employees and be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week.
City hall on view Friday
LOWELLVILLE -- The village's spruced-up city hall will be on display at an open house from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday.
The public is invited and refreshments will be served.
Citizens get a chance to check out a variety of improvements that have been made at city hall over the past 60 days, including a new roof, new carpet and new tile and repainted offices.
About $95,000 has been spent on improvements to the 1935 building, which was completed in 1935. Most of the money, around $83,000, came from sales tax seed money, said Lowellville Mayor James Iudiciani Sr. The remainder came from the general fund.
Tech center elects pair
CANFIELD --Kathi McNabb Welsh was elected president and J. Paul Good vice president of the Mahoning County Career & amp; Technical Center board of education at its organizational meeting Monday. The board will meet at 3:30 p.m. the third Monday of each month in the board conference room.
Crash kills driver
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A 74-year-old Harmony, Pa., man was killed when the car he was driving slid a on snow-covered road, struck an embankment and flipped onto its roof, Pennsylvania State Police said.
Eugene Rice, of Stone Church Road, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene after losing control on northbound Pa. Route 19 in Lawrence County about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday.
