Deputy resigns
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County Deputy Sheriff Raymond Hull III, who avoided trial next week by pleading guilty Wednesday to his part in the beating of an inmate, resigned Thursday afternoon, said Sheriff Randall A. Wellington.
The sheriff said that, after the plea, he immediately changed Hull's status from paid to unpaid leave and sent a letter advising the 35-year-old Poland man that he had seven days to resign or face a predisciplinary hearing. Hull faces 12 to 18 months in prison when sentenced in May.
Police seek motorist
HUBBARD -- Township police are searching for the driver who took off after his car crashed into a utility pole, leaving 700 residents without power for several hours. According to Trumbull County 911, the crash took place around 2 a.m. Thursday in the 1600 block of Masury Road S.E.
The car was at the scene when police arrived, but the driver was gone. Power was restored to all residents about eight hours after the crash, an Ohio Edison manager said.
Man pleads innocent
HUBBARD -- A 49-year-old township man has pleaded innocent to a felony charge of aggravated arson. David Barlett of Jacobs Road entered the plea Thursday in Girard Municipal Court. He is being held in the county jail in lieu of a $20,000 bond and is due back in court Wednesday, township police Detective Michael Begeot said. Begeot said Barlett is accused of starting a fire in his home early Thursday. No injuries were reported.
Road to be closed
CRAIG BEACH -- Two sections of Grand View Road will be closed for construction in the coming weeks. Starting Monday, crews will work on the road between Stock Street and Market Street, which will result in a five-day closure. Starting March 6, construction will take place on the road between Craig Drive and Afton Avenue, closing it for six days.
Contract negotiations
NORTH LIMA -- The South Range Local Board of Education will meet in special executive session for the purpose of contract negotiations with the district's teachers union, the South Range Education Association, today and March 4. The meetings will be at South Range High School at 7 p.m.
Juvenile case
YOUNGSTOWN -- The case of two pupils, ages 13 and 14, at Volney Rogers Junior High School who threw shoes at their bus driver has been turned over to the police department's juvenile division. The bus driver told police Wednesday that the first shoe missed him but the second struck him in the back of the head and knocked off his glasses while he was driving Feb. 16.
Boy, 10, arrested
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 10-year-old West Elementary School boy who brought a knife to school Wednesday was arrested on a charge of illegal conveyance of a dangerous weapon onto school property and taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center.
Woman reports robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 66-year-old Hubbard woman told police that she was robbed at gunpoint by a man who approached her and her 16-year-old grandson as they left a McGuffey Road barbershop Wednesday evening. The woman said the gunman first ordered them into the trunk of her car but they wouldn't fit. He then told the boy to lie on the floor in the rear of the car and ordered the woman to drive to an ATM for money. The woman said she drove to an ATM in the Lincoln Knolls Plaza but had difficulty with her card. The gunman became irate and took cash and a cell phone from her purse. He then told her to drop him off near Sunshine Avenue, which she did.
Theft by deception
AUSTINTOWN -- Police arrested a Boardman man Thursday morning on a theft by deception charge. RPM Motors, Canfield Road, told police that Robert S, Marino, 30, of Meadowbrook Avenue, paid for a 2001 Cadillac Deville on Feb. 13 with a check allegedly written on an invalid account.
Marino was released after posting at $4,000 bond and is to appear Monday in Mahoning County Court here.
