Homicide victim ID'd
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dr. David Kennedy, Mahoning County coroner, has identified the city's 34th homicide victim of 2005 as Anthony J. Thomas, 37 of Cherry Hill.
Police said Saturday there were no other developments in the investigation.
A 2001 Pontiac Bonneville reported carjacked from a gas station on East Midlothian Boulevard turned up in the driveway of a vacant house on the East Side with a body in the back seat, police said.
Mahoning County coroner's investigator Rick Jamrozik said the man, found Friday morning, had been shot twice in the torso but probably was not shot in the car.
The Pontiac's owner told police that the car was taken from him early Friday at the Shell station at 505 East Midlothian on the South Side.
Red Cross blanket drive
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The American Red Cross will hold its second annual blanket drive Jan. 14.
A $5 donation will buy a blanket for a family in need. Each blanket is 54 inches by 72 inches and embroidered with the Red Cross logo. Donors can remain anonymous, have a donor card attached to the blanket or donate the blanket in honor/memory of someone.
Along with the blanket drive, volunteers will be taking donations of new or gently used toys to children after a fire.
Red Cross Volunteers will be at three locations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 14: Giant Eagle on Wilmington Road, Kmart in Shenango Township and Wal-Mart on State Street.
Trash pickups in Warren
WARREN -- Garbage will be collected on regularly scheduled days between Christmas and New Year's Day and in the week beginning Jan. 1, the city's environmental service department announced. Between Monday and Friday, trash collectors will pick up not only garbage in city-issued cans, but also holiday trash, including bags and boxes on the ground.
Crash kills Minerva man
EAST ROCHESTER -- Troopers of the Lisbon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a fatal crash in West Township. The patrol said Randall Amelung, 44, of Minerva, was killed in the crash around 9 p.m. Friday on U.S. Route 30. The patrol said a tanker truck was driving east on Route 30 and stopped at a railroad crossing. Amelung was driving an Oldsmobile east on Route 30 and struck the rear of the truck. The truck driver was not injured.
Man charged after fight
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Hubbard man will appear at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Youngstown Municipal Court on charges of assault of a peace officer, vandalism and resisting arrest.
Police said a fight broke out at The Cell bar, 221 Belmont Ave., around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, just after closing. Police were in the parking lot when they saw Jeffrey Franklin, 23 of Lewis Avenue, yelling at another bar patron.
An officer stopped between the two and Franklin grabbed the officer's badge, pulled off his lapel microphone and tore his YPD sweater, police said.
He swung at the officer, who tackled Franklin and eventually had to use pepper spray to subdue him, police said.
