SATURDAY Scrappers blank Doubledays 4-0
NILES -- Joe Ness and two relievers combined on a two-hit shutout, and P.J. Hiser hit his fifth home run of the season, leading the Mahoning Valley Scrappers to a 4-0 victory over the Auburn Doubledays Saturday night at Eastwood Field.
Ness pitched the first five innings, allowing just five base runners, on two hits and three walks.
Thomas Cowley pitched three hitless innings and Albert Vargas retired the side in order in the ninth.
Cowley (2-3) picked up the victory.
The Scrappers' pitchers were so dominant, no Auburn runner advanced past second base.
Hiser's home run, a solo shot, came in the eighth inning and finished the scoring.
The Scrappers broke a scoreless tie in the sixth. Evandy De Leon and Matthew Fornasiere led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After Hiser popped out, Auburn pitcher Randy Dicken uncorked a wild pitch.
Andrew Lytle then singled to right, scoring De Leon. Fornasiere then scored when Lytle got tagged out in a rundown between first and second.
The Scrappers extended their lead to 3-0 an inning later. With two outs, Jose Chavez and Jose Constanza drew walks, then De Leon hit an RBI single to right. The shutout was the Scrappers' third of the season and second against Auburn.
