WARREN -- The 21st annual Western Reserve Classic Charity Horse Show, an award-winning multibreed horse show, will return to Perkins Park.
Sessions will be at noon and 6 p.m. Sept. 16 and at 8 a.m., 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sept. 17. Championship classes will be at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sept. 18.
Show organizers also are host to American Saddlebred Horse Association of Ohio $4,000 Added Sweepstakes and American Saddlebred Horse Futurity of Pennsylvania. Admission is free, although donations will be accepted.
Other facets of the event include a silent auction, food and merchandise vendors and pony rides. Proceeds go to Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County.
Crisis center training
YOUNGSTOWN -- Help Hotline Crisis Center is offering free training classes for people interested in volunteering for the 24-hour hot line that deals with referral and crisis intervention.
Classes will meet from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on five consecutive Mondays, Sept. 26 through Oct. 24. There also will be one class from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 29. Volunteers are asked to make a six-month commitment.

Road closings
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Engineer's Office will close three roads at various times to replace culverts.
Tibbetts-Wick Road, between Pleasant Valley Road (Keefer Road) and state Route 193, Liberty, will be closed two days beginning Sept. 6; State Road, between Phalanx Herner Mills and Girdle roads, Farmington, four days beginning Sept. 6; and Phalanx Herner Mills at the intersection of State Road, two days beginning Thursday.
Freedom Banquet
WARREN -- Warren Trumbull County NAACP will host its annual Freedom Banquet on Oct. 6 at W.D. Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave. N.W. Social hour will be at 5 p.m., dinner at 6.
Speaker will be Randolph Baxter, chief judge of the Northern District of Ohio Bankruptcy Court.

Board of education
COLUMBIANA -- The village board of education will meet at 6:30 p.m. today in the media center at Columbiana High School to consider passage of the Columbiana Education Association master agreement and other business.
Checkpoints planned
NILES -- City police will be out in full force during the Labor Day holiday to curb drunken driving and enforce driving laws.
"We encourage anyone planning on drinking alcohol to be responsible and designate a sober driver. With checkpoints, roving patrols, undercover officers and concerned citizens, chances are if you drive impaired this holiday, you will be arrested," Police Chief Bruce Simeone said.
