Sitter who shook baby gets 2 years in prison

LISBON -- A Negley woman caught by a hidden video camera violently shaking an infant she was baby-sitting was sentenced Friday to two years in prison.
The infant, who was 10 months old at the time of the abuse Sept. 19, 2004, was not seriously injured.
Geraldine Sarver, 50, of state Route 170, New Waterford, was found guilty of endangering children. Judge David Tobin of Columbiana County Common Pleas Court could have sentenced her to up to five years in prison.
Before sentencing, Sarver told the judge she did not remember anything about the event. She did not make a statement to the court on the advice of her lawyer.
Assistant county prosecutor Timothy McNicol said Sarver had contended she had a nervous breakdown and was depressed, but she did not seek treatment.
Sarver was hired after responding to a newspaper ad run by a Negley couple.
McNicol said the couple planted the camera after the child had minor injuries that could not be explained.
