Molecular microbiology
Jeffrey M. Milush of Boardman has received his doctorate in molecular microbiology from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas.
Milush completed the five-year doctoral program with the defense of his thesis "Early Events Following Oral Transmission of Simian Inmmunodeficiency Virus: From Viral Entry to Host Immune Response."
He conducted his thesis research in the laboratory of Donald Sodara, Ph.D. Milush's research has used the monkey model of HIV infection to understand how the virus that causes AIDS enters and spreads through the body after oral exposure.
Oral transmission is prevalent in developing countries, where 30 percent of breast-fed babies are infected with the AIDS virus from infected mothers. Milush's research is important in the development of an effective AIDS vaccine.
Results of his research have been presented at international meetings including Canada and Thailand and were recently published in the December 2004 issue of the journal AIDS.
Milush is the son of Jean and Martin Milush of Boardman. He is a 1995 graduate of Youngstown State University and was inducted into the chemistry and biology honorary fraternities as well as the Leadership Society of outstanding student leaders.
Milush lives in Dallas, where he will continue his postdoctoral research.

Eagle award recipient
Kyle Hippley was to receive his Eagle Scout Award today in St. Michael Church, Canfield, from Troop 115. Ed Hahn is the scoutmaster.
Hippley received 26 badges and the Arrow of Light Cub Scout Award, BSA Lifeguard Certification, BSA Snorkeling Certification, Paul Bunyan Award, 50-mile Foot Afloat, Ad Altari Dei Religion Award, Pope Pius XII Religion Award, Junior Leader Training, Tinnerman Canoe Leaf, Tinnerman Canoe Base, Canada national Jamboree 2001 participant, Fort A.P. Hill and the Virginia Gettysburg Historical Patch.
His Eagle Scout service project involved tree and stump removal at the church, making landscape improvements with multiple tree and shrub plantings, placing river rock, painting multiple air-conditioning units, restringing and illumination of the flagpole, placing stepping stones to flagpole and raising a new flag.
Hippley worked with the Rev. Terry Hazel from St. Michael, fellow Boy Scouts and family to complete the project.
He is a lifeguard at Central Branch YMCA in downtown Youngstown and is attending Youngstown State University's Metro College, where he is enrolled in the emergency medical technician basic course. He will attend YSU this fall studying the paramedic program. He is pursuing a career in emergency services as a paramedic and plans to become a professional in search and rescue.

Pharmacy degree
Patricia M. Schuler, a daughter of William and Patriciann Schuler of Canfield, has earned her doctor of pharmacy degree from Ohio State University.
A 1997 graduate of Canfield High School, she earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Youngstown State University in 2000.
Schuler is a pharmacy practice resident at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, N.C. After completing a pharmacy practice residency, Schuler plans to pursue a specialty residency in cardiology.
