Car hit by gunfire
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 3-week-old girl was inside a car with her father when the car was hit by gunfire on East Warren Avenue around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday, reports show.
No injuries were reported.
The father told police that a dark blue car pulled into the driveway of a vacant house next to him and a man ran from it to the corner of Warren and Erie and shot at a passing car. The occupants of the passing car apparently returned fire, and one shot hit the rear passenger door where the girl was sitting. The glass broke.
13-year jail sentence
WARREN -- A 21-year-old Dana Street man was sentenced Thursday to 13 years in prison on burglary and firearms violations.
Corey A. Hurst was sentenced by Judge John M. Stuard of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. He pleaded guilty earlier to two counts each of burglary and being a convicted felon having a gun.
Hurst was on parole when he broke into two homes in Warren.
3 years for homicide
LISBON -- A Lisbon man has been sentenced to three years in prison for killing a pedestrian.
Jeremy L. Simpson, 31, of Applegate Road, was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide after the accident on Oct. 31, 2004.
Common Pleas Court Judge David Tobin imposed the sentence Wednesday. Simpson was convicted after a trial.
Simpson was driving north on state Route 45 north of Wellsville and passed another northbound motorist at the top of a hill while crossing the double-yellow no-passing lines and struck Jack Bennett, 86, of state Route 45.
Officials said a reconstruction of the accident showed that Simpson was driving his pickup truck at least 10 miles over the speed limit.
Police probe shooting
CAMPBELL -- City police continue to investigate a shooting Wednesday night in which a Youngstown man was shot in the chin. William T. Fowler III, 25, was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center. The shooting occurred on Jean Street near Jackson.
No arrests have been made, but police said Thursday they have a suspect.
Jailed after traffic stop
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- A Poland man was being held in the Mahoning County Jail after a traffic stop in New Middletown this week revealed he has outstanding warrants for his arrest on felony charges in Pennsylvania.
Village police stopped Joseph Hayes, 24, of Calla Road, for a traffic violation Tuesday night on Main Street. A computer check showed that Hayes faces charges in the New Castle area, including armed robbery, theft, receiving stolen property, making terrorist threats, assault, possessing criminal tools and possessing controlled drugs.
New Middletown police cited Hayes on drug-related charges after finding suspected drug paraphernalia and drugs in his car during the traffic stop.
Hayes is awaiting an extradition hearing to return to Pennsylvania.
New Middletown police also are investigating the theft of a 16-foot car hauler from behind a business on Main Street. The hauler is black with a wooden bed. Anyone with information about it is asked to contact the police department at (330) 542-2846.
DUI checkpoint
PULASKI, Pa. -- The Lawrence County DUI Enforcement Team will be conducting a checkpoint sometime between today and Sunday in the township.
The checkpoint objective is to deter drunken driving, reduce the number of DUI-related accidents and to apprehend DUI violators.
Departments participating are Neshannock, New Wilmington, and Northwestern Regional police departments.
Canfield band night
CANFIELD -- The Canfield High School marching band hosts its annual band show at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the high school stadium, 100 Cardinal Drive.
Bands performing are from Struthers, Boardman, West Branch, Austintown, Poland and the host band. Tickets are $5 for adults; $4 pupils and seniors; and free for children 5 and under.
