VARSITY SOCCER Howland freshman scores twice in defeat of Ursuline

Both the Tigers' boys and girls teams turned in victories.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Freshman Eric Albani scored twice as the Howland High boys soccer team defeated Ursuline, 2-0, Wednesday at Mill Creek Park.
Albani's first goal was a header off a corner kick by freshman Ryan Gerin at the 29-minute mark of the first half.
The second one came on a penalty kick at the 38-second mark of the second half.
Howland (1-0-0) goalkeeper Paul Burley made two saves and teammate Dan Miller made one.
Ursuline (0-2-0) goalkeeper Jared Daly made five saves.
Boardman 2, Champion 0
BOARDMAN -- Bob Davis and T.J. Hosa scored for the Spartans.
Goalkeeper Matt Moore earned the shutout.
Poland 4, Chagrin Falls 2
POLAND -- Dain Malaniak scored twice in the Bulldogs' season opener.
Chris Moore and Blake Rheins scored second-half goals to seal the victory. Rhein also had two assists.
Girls
HOWLAND -- Kaylan Hovance and Megan Long each scored to lead Howland to a 2-1 victory over Howland.
Allie Airhart assisted on Hovance's goal and Laura Sespik assisted for Long. Melisa Airhart made seven saves for the Tigers (2-0).
Allie Nero score Lakeview's goal off an assist from Jen Baker. Lindsay Mellot made 12 saves in goal for the Bulldogs.
Maplewood 2, Conneaut 2
CONNEAIUT -- Kristina Peterson scored twice and Tori Spencer had assists for Maplewood (0-0-2). Goalkeeper Leah Dean made 23 saves.
Kelly Taneto and Kristen Gebe scored for Conneaut (0-0-1).
