Statue reported stolen
YOUNGSTOWN -- Someone wanted a statue of the Virgin Mary from a yard in the 300 block of South Hazelwood Avenue bad enough to dig it out and break off its concrete base, police said. The statue, worth about $100, had been displayed in a flower bed. The theft was reported Tuesday.
Theft of doorknobs
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ten doorknobs, three light fixtures and a stained glass window were taken from a 90-year-old, nine-room house in the 40 block of Ellenwood Avenue sometime Tuesday while the resident was at work, reports show. Value of the items was not listed. The resident told police he thinks entry was made through a side door. Police found no forced entry.
Truck stolen, abandoned
YOUNGSTOWN -- A meter reader for the Youngstown Water Department saw a man driving off in her truck when she returned to it in the Foster Street area Tuesday afternoon, police said. The truck was found within minutes, abandoned at Ford and Alameda avenues. The meter reader said her wallet had been in the truck and was missing when she got the vehicle back.
Summer safety day
HOWLAND -- The township fire department will have its last summer safety day of the year from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Super Kmart on state Route 46. There will be fire and police vehicles on display, child fingerprinting and free gun locks, bicycle helmets and bike inspections. The township smoke and tornado safety trailer will also be on display along with a Stat Medevac helicopter.
'Corvette Cash' jackpot
YOUNGSTOWN -- One Ohio Lottery instant ticket has made a Warren man $101,000 richer. Lonnie Reed bought a "Corvette Cash" ticket earlier this month that contained a winning combination for $1,000 cash and a TPD symbol that qualified him for the game's top prize drawing. Wednesday, Reed picked up a check for $100,000 at the lottery's Youngstown regional office for winning that drawing.
Prison for bad checks
MERCER, Pa. -- A Mercer woman will serve two to seven years in prison for passing about $2,0000 worth of bad checks last year. Mercer County Common Pleas Court Judge Francis Fornelli sentenced Carrie Adams, 32, of Applewood Lane, on Tuesday for three counts of theft by deception, all misdemeanors. She was also ordered to pay restitution and given 111 days credit for time already served. According to records, Adams wrote more than $2,000 in bad checks in July 2004.
Guilford Lake meeting
GUILFORD LAKE -- Guilford Lake Civic Association has its meeting at 7 tonight at the Ruritan Pavilion on state Route 172. Addressing the group will be Columbiana County Sheriff Dave Smith, who will discuss security issues that have come up around the lake. Bill Snyder, area supervisor of the Division of Watercraft for Ohio Department of Natural Resources, will answer questions regarding activity on the lake. Phil Hillman of the ODNR's Division of Fish and Wildlife has promised to attend the meeting and talk about fish issues that have come up repeatedly at the lake. People wishing to become Ruritan members are welcome, dues are $2.50 per person.
New freshman class
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College will welcome 390 new students Friday for the start of its 153rd academic year. The Fresh Start team, made up of 80 returning Westminster student volunteers, will greet the 368 freshmen and 22 transfer students and help move them into residence halls. The volunteers will also assist with the four-day freshman orientation. Classes begin Tuesday. Westminster limited its incoming freshmen class to about 365 students this year from nearly 17,000 inquiries and 1,400 applications. Total enrollment, including graduate school and the Lifelong Learning Program, will likely surpass 1,600 in the fall.
Book bag giveaway
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County Juvenile Court, in cooperation with its advisory board, passed out 500 book bags filled with supplies to area children in kindergarten through the 12th grade Wednesday. The donations were made possible through the efforts of local companies and citizens. Refreshments and food and an appearance by the Youngstown SteelHounds hockey team mascot Crusher highlighted the book bag giveaway at the juvenile justice center on Scott Street.
