SCRAPPERS No mistake about it, Mahoning Valley wins

NILES -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers had a runner thrown out at the plate to end the seventh inning. They weren't going to make that mistake a second time.
With two out in the last of the ninth inning, Chad Longworth scored from third base on a wild pitch Wednesday to give the Scrappers a 4-3 win over the Jamestown Jammers at Eastwood Field.
The daring baserunning by Longworth kept the Scrappers (30-31) in the running for the New York-Penn League playoffs and snapped a four-game losing streak.
"I was just looking for the ball to trickle away, even enough to just have a chance because I was going to be pretty aggressive," Longworth said. "I had already made up my mind I was going to be aggressive if the ball got away."
Scores standing
He scored standing up, just beating the swipe tag of the Jamestown pitcher Travis Talbott who was covering.
"I just wanted to try to stay up as long as possible," Longworth said. "That way if I crossed paths with the ball it might hit me. It ended up being a closer play than I thought it was going to be."
That Longworth even had a chance to score speaks well of the running-first mentality of the Scrappers.
With one out in the ninth, Longworth walked and received the sign to try to steal his third base of the year.
"I got the steal sign and I went first move and he just picked over," Longworth said.
The pitcher threw to first base and it appeared Longworth would be out at second. However, the relay throw got away from Jamestown shortstop Paul Witt, enabling Longworth to advance.
"I saw his throw bounce away so I went to third," Longworth said.
Deters throws well
Jim Deters started for the Scrappers and threw six strong innings. He faced just 20 hitters -- two over the minimum -- and came out with a 3-2 lead.
Deters allowed two hits, no walks and struck out seven.
He said it was his best performance of the season.
"I had a couple extra days off for the all-star break," Deters said. "My arm felt good and I was locating my fastball pretty well.
"I had a pretty good curveball and it seemed to work out tonight."
Jamestown (26-35) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when Jamar Walton ripped an RBI triple to center and scored on a throwing error.
Jose Chavez got the Scrappers on the board in the fifth inning with a 350-foot homer to left. It was his first home run this year.
Chavez also singled in the third inning but was thrown out trying to steal third base.
