Scores and reports of high school athletic events can be reported to The Vindicator sports department in the following ways: by E-mail to sports@vindy.com; by fax to (330) 747-6712, or by phone to (330) 747-1478, or (330) 747-1471 (extensions 1292, 1370, 1593, 1594, 1595 or 1596).
It is recommended that scores and reports be submitted by E-mail or fax. First names of all participants listed must be included. Team records should also be included, as well as the site of the contest.
The deadline for reporting scores is 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; 11:45 p.m. Friday and 9:45 p.m. Saturday. Scores that are reported after those times will be accepted and published in the next possible edition.
Fitch-Chaneytickets go on sale
AUSTINTOWN -- Tickets for Friday's football game against Chaney go on sale Thursday at Austintown Fitch's South Circle ticket office from 6-8 p.m.
Veterans will receive one free ticket, with identification, on Thursday.
Dorothy Fosterto be honored
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Dorothy Weaver Foster, formerly of Youngstown, has been awarded the International Volunteer of the Year award by Little League International.
She is the Administrative Vice President of the Lionville (Pa.) Youth Association. Foster is a 1951 graduate of Ursuline High School and lives in Downingtown, Pa.
The award honors Foster's 31 years of service to her community, Little League baseball and softball.
Foster engineered the building of Lionville Park, a 25-acre community park and brought Little League to Lionville.
She has numerous duties, including editing the Lionville Youth Assn.'s newsletter.
Foster volunteers more than 70 hours each week for the Lionville Youth Association.
She and her husband of 42 years, Al, will be guests of the Little League at the Little League World Series. The presentation of her award in Williamsport, Pa., Thursdaybefore the 7:30 p.m. game will be shown on ESPN2.
SteelHoundssign defender
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown SteelHounds ice hockey team has signed defenseman Matt Nicholson.
Nicholson, 23, played in 31 games last year, his first professional season, with the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs (CHL). The London, Ontario native scored three goals (two were game winners) and had eight assists with 77 penalty minutes and a plus 10 rating.
"Matt is a player coming from one of the premier franchises in the CHL," SteelHounds coach Jean Laforest said. "That exposure and experience, will be an asset for Matt and our organization.
"He's a defenseman that competes physically and a player that we will look to help contribute on our special teams," LaForest said.
The defenseman was selected by the SteelHounds in the CHL's expansion draft. Nicholson joins fellow defensemen Kris Mallette and Kelly Sickavish becoming the third player signed by Youngstown.
The 6-0, 205-pound blueliner played his collegiate hockey at Colgate University dressing in 123 games scoring two goals with 10 helpers and 147 penalty minutes.
Phantoms setpreseason slate
BOARDMAN -- The Mahoning Valley Phantoms have announced their 2005-06 pre-season schedule.
The Phantoms will host a trio of Ohio hockey teams over the Labor Day holiday weekend at The Ice Zone.
On Sept. 3, they will host the Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks of the Central States Hockey League at 3 p.m.
The Columbus Jr. Blue Jackets, also of the CSHL, will face off against the Phantoms on Sept. 4 at 3 p.m.
The weekend finale will see their North American Hockey League (NAHL) rival Cleveland Jr. Barons invade Boardman for a 7 p.m. start on Sept. 5.
Admission is free.
The Phantoms' season opener is Sept. 9 when they face the U.S. National Under-18 Team in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Bucs' Castilloout for season
PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Jose Castillo will miss the rest of the season with a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee but won't require surgery that might have kept him from being ready next spring.
