Officials await results of inmate's autopsy

MERCER, Pa. -- Autopsy results are pending in the death of a Mercer County Jail inmate at the Clinton County Jail.
Mercer County Sheriff Bill Romine told the county prison board Monday that the Aug. 13 death of Robert A. Young, 36, appears to be a suicide by hanging. Clinton County state police and the coroner there investigated the death. Young was from the Slippery Rock area, Romine said.
Young was incarcerated June 9 in the Mercer County Jail for driving under the influence and probation violations. On July 11, he was transferred to Clinton County Jail. Mercer County Jail inmates are routinely transferred to other jails because of overcrowding.
The prison board and Young's family requested an autopsy, which has been completed in Erie County at the request of the Mercer County Coroner.
No autopsies are done in Mercer County. The coroner pays to have them done elsewhere.
Romine said that when the autopsy report is issued, he will meet with other local officials as well as with Young's family.
