Cake-decorating contest
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Children's Museum of the Valley, 139 E. Boardman St., is accepting entries for a cake-decorating contest.
The contest will be judged at the museum's one-year anniversary celebration Saturday.
Participants must register by 4 p.m. Wednesday, except for cakes that require refrigeration, which can be registered for the competition until 9 a.m. Saturday.
Local media personalities will judge the contest, beginning at 10 a.m. Prizes include a trophy, a family membership to the museum and visitors' passes.
The one-year anniversary celebration will open to the public at noon Saturday. For more information, call the museum (330) 744-5914.
Community block party
YOUNGSTOWN -- Whole Man Ministries is sponsoring a back-to-school community block party from noon to 9 p.m. Sept. 3 on Park Avenue, next to Wick Park.
The theme for the event is "Stopping the Violence." The event is to raise community awareness of the importance of working together to help build and maintain self-esteem, positive attitudes and sound minds to better togetherness and harmony.
Guests scheduled to attend include Youngstown's 102 Jamz personality Lucky Penny and Jarred Andrews, "American Idol" Top 30 winner and 2004 winner of "Live in Hollywood."
Closing for repairs
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- South Neshannock Road (Pa. Route 3037) will be closed to traffic between state Route 3011 (South Keel Ridge Road) and Virginia Road from Tuesday through Friday, weather permitting.
The roadway is expected to be closed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a cross pipe replacement. A red arrow detour route will be posted. The northbound detour for South Keel Ridge will go to Virginia Road East to South Neshannock North to East State Street North.
The southbound detour for South Neshannock will go west on Virginia Road to South Keel Ridge to South Neshannock Road.
Core drilling to begin
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Core drilling operations on Stoughton Road Bridge (T-485) in Scott Township will begin next Monday. The work will be completed between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Traffic will be maintained through the work area, but minor delays should be expected. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the workday Sept. 9.
Testing pressure canners
CANFIELD -- The Ohio State University Extension Office, 520 W. Main St., will conduct a testing clinic for pressure canners from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday. There is a $5 fee to have your canner checked to get ready for the upcoming canning season. There will be information available on canning.
The pressure canner lid can be dropped off at the Extension Office to be checked and picked up at a later time. For more information, call (330) 533-5538.
