THE 2005-06 SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS DURING THE NEXT MONTH THROUGHOUT THE MAHONING VALLEY AND WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA. HERE ARE SOME OF THE NEW STAFF MEMBERS, SIGNIFICANT CURRICULUM CHANGES AND MAJOR

The 2005-06 school year begins during the next month throughout the Mahoning Valley and western Pennsylvania. Here are some of the new staff members, significant curriculum changes and major renovations pupils will see when they return to class. Districts and schools not included did not supply information.
MAHONING COUNTY
AUSTINTOWN
Administrators: Douglas Heuer, superintendent; Michael Woods, Woodside Elementary principal; and Anthony Russo, Lynn Kirk Elementary principal.
Renovations: Continuing construction of new middle school.
BOARDMAN
Administrators: Bob Martinko, assistant principal at Glenwood Middle School; Don Robinson, principal at Robinwood Elementary; Al Cervello, principal at West Elementary; and James Goske, principal at Stadium Drive Elementary.
CAMPBELL
Administrators: Thomas Robey, superintendent; Thomas Kempe, assistant high school principal; Marcia Norris, principal for fifth through eighth grades; and Robert Walls, principal for kindergarten through fourth grade.
CANFIELD
Renovations: Repaired high school gym floor, replaced two boilers at the middle school, and recarpeted several classrooms.
CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF YOUNGSTOWN
Administrators: Sister Charlotte Italiano, Immaculate Conception principal; Cheryl Jablonski, St. Matthias principal; and Christine Kijowski, Holy Family principal.
JACKSON-MILTON
Curriculum: Launching individual teacher Web sites.
LOWELLVILLE
Administrator: Sam Ramunno, assuming responsibility as principal of all grades.
Curriculum: Offering music theory program.
MAHONING COUNTY CAREER AND TECHNICAL CENTER
Administrator: Pete Pirone, interim assistant principal.
MAHONING COUNTY EDUCATIONAL SERVICE CENTER
Curriculum: Introducing the Ohio Early Learning Initiative program in Mahoning and Trumbull counties to provide quality education and child care for 3- to 5-year-olds at no cost or low cost to working families.
POLAND
Administrator: Donna Cartwright, food service director.
Curriculum: Incorporating new texts and technology, developing individual teacher Web sites, and coordinating math and reading departments to match state testing standards.
Renovations: Developed new video taping production room at middle school; upgraded computers at all schools; purchased a defibrillator for each school; and completed Phase III of the PMS-McKinley Elementary facilities improvement project.
SOUTH RANGE
Administrator: Steven Matos, elementary principal.
SPRINGFIELD
Administrators: Anthony DeFelice, high school principal; David Malone, assistant high school principal; and Damon Dohar, special education coordinator.
Curriculum: Beginning new math program at the intermediate school.
Renovations: Installed new computer lab in elementary school and a wireless computer lab in the intermediate school, and updated the high school computer lab.
STRUTHERS
Administrators: Vince Colaluca, director of instruction and part-time middle school principal, and Rob Conklin, director of athletics, ticket manager and open enrollment coordinator.
WEST BRANCH
Curriculum: Beginning to use a new social studies series and an elementary math series.
Renovations: Completed Damascus and Knox elementary school buildings, and completed additions to the high school.
WESTERN RESERVE
Curriculum: Added freshman and sophomore vocational classes at the new high-tech vocational lab, and replaced Language Arts materials for kindergarten through sixth grades.
YOUNGSTOWN
Administrators: Sandy Mislevy, East Middle School principal; Rachel Smith, West Elementary principal; Karen Clayton, Kirkmere Elementary principal; Bruce Palmer, Alpha School principal; Sandra Smith, Athena School principal; and Bill Esterly, Odyssey School principal.
Curriculum: Dividing each high school into several "small schools" to make pupils feel more connected. A dean will head each one of the "small schools" of several hundred children.
Renovations: Completed construction of the new West Elementary building and continuing construction of the new Williamson Elementary scheduled to open at the beginning of 2006. Opening two "gender schools," the Alpha School of Excellence for seventh- and eighth-grade boys and the Athena School of Excellence for seventh- and eighth-grade girls. Also opening the Odyssey School of Possibilities. The Alpha, Athena and Odyssey schools are at the sites of older Youngstown schools.
YOUNGSTOWN CHRISTIAN SCHOOL
Administrators: Edy Wytham, middle school vice principal, and Nancy Jacobsen, elementary vice principal.
Curriculum: Added Accelerated Christian Education program.
Renovations: Completed new high school building, including a gym and chapel.
YOUNGSTOWN COMMUNITY SCHOOL
Curriculum: Developed a plan to enhance math curriculum, including after-school intervention for third through sixth grades.
Renovations: Installed permanent partitions in kindergarten classrooms and renovated school office.
TRUMBULL COUNTY
BRISTOL
Administrator: Gene Jones, middle school/ high school principal.
Renovations: Added new roofing to the high school.
BROOKFIELD
Administrator: Michael Notar, superintendent.
CHAMPION
Administrators: Michele Bonno, high school principal, and James Guterba, part-time assistant middle school principal.
Curriculum: Added an Honors Chemistry course at the high school and speech for credit for eighth-graders.
GIRARD
Administrator: William Ryser, junior high principal.
Curriculum: Incorporating food service program with health and physical education classes to form a nutritional/physical fitness program.
HOLY TRINITY ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN ACADEMY, WARREN

HOWLAND

HUBBARD
Administrator: Jim Vivo, athletic director.
Curriculum: Instituting a new elementary math program.

Curriculum: Offering Advanced Placement Chemistry course at high school.

Renovations: Closed three former schools after completing a new K-12 facility, which opens this year.
LIBERTY

Curriculum: Using grants to integrate technology at E.J. Blott Elementary.
LORDSTOWN
Administrator: Anthony Calderone, high school principal.
MAPLEWOOD
Administrator: Kevin Spicher, middle school principal.
Curriculum: Purchased new math curriculum for kindergarten through sixth grades.
NEWTON FALLS
Curriculum: Expanded the accelerated math program into all grades and added a distance learning lab. Also added a "Scantek" career module lab for seventh through ninth grades.
Renovations: Continuing construction of new junior high/high school building.
NILES
Administrator: Geri Melillo, supervisor for education of exceptional children.
Curriculum: Decreased class sizes at the elementary school and in high school science classes.
Renovations: Replaced the high school boiler system and the hot water system at Lincoln Elementary, and re-roofed the high school and three elementary schools. Added new lighting and heating controls at the high school and elementary schools to save energy.
TRUMBULL CAREER AND TECHNICAL CENTER
Administrator: Jodi Riedle, special needs program supervisor.
Curriculum: Added ROTC and American Sign Language programs.
Renovations: Broke ground for new 44,000 square foot adult education wing.
WARREN
Administrators: Kathryn Hellweg, superintendent; Claudia von Ostwalden, assistant principal at Harding High School; Robert Snyder, assistant principal at Western Reserve Middle School; Jill Merolla, McGuffey Elementary principal; Mary Jo Cross, principal on special assignment at McGuffey Elementary; Karen Thomas, Garfield Elementary principal; Edward Ashcroft, Horrace Mann Elementary principal; and John Wilson, Washington Alternative Center principal.
Renovations: Installed new artificial turf at Harding's Mollenkopf Stadium.
WEATHERSFIELD
Curriculum: Purchased new science textbooks for all grades.
Renovations: Installed handrails on stairs and security lights outside elementary building; replaced tile and purchased new freezer for middle school cafeteria; and purchased new cafeteria tables and chairs and repaired P.A. system at the high school.
COLUMBIANA COUNTY
COLUMBIANA COUNTY CAREER AND TECHNICAL CENTER
Administrators: Karen Taylor, director and assistant superintendent; Jeremy Corbisello, assistant principal; and Sue Allison, student services coordinator.
Curriculum: Added Higher Education Center of Columbiana County.
CRESTVIEW
Administrators: David McKay, middle school principal, and Marian Dangerfield, elementary school principal.
EAST LIVERPOOL
Administrator: Jack Cunningham, LaCroft Elementary principal.
HEARTLAND CHRISTIAN SCHOOL
Renovations: Completed renovations to the auditorium.
LEETONIA
Curriculum: Intervention period added at the middle school.
Renovations: Alumni nearing completion of memorial bell tower at stadium entrance.
LISBON
Renovations: Completed renovation and additions to elementary school. Continuing renovation and addition to junior/senior high school.
UNITED
Administrator: Frank Baker, assistant principal at the junior/senior high school.
Renovations: Remodeled eighth-grade science room and nurse's clinic; replaced high school lockers; put new carpeting in elementary and high school libraries; added stage lighting in auditorium; and spray painted exteriors of elementary gym and bus garage.
MERCER COUNTY
FARRELL
Administrator: Lee McFerren, high school principal.
GREENVILLE
Curriculum: Introduced a Web-based grade posting system for seventh through 12th grades and started a new elementary reading program.
GROVE CITY
Curriculum: Implementing the new reading program purchased last year for all grades.
SHARON
Administrators: Leonard Rich, high school principal.
Curriculum: Added a new elementary math program and adopted a district-wide student code of conduct.
SHARPSVILLE
Administrator: John Vannoy, middle school principal.
WEST MIDDLESEX
Curriculum: Added block classes for secondary grade levels, and added calculus and Honors English 12 courses as "College in the Classroom" courses through the University of Pittsburgh. Introduced new math series for kindergarten through sixth grades. Changed report cards from every six weeks to every nine weeks.
Renovations: Re-roofed high school and installed new security system, and installed new life skills classroom and restroom.
LAWRENCE COUNTY
ELLWOOD CITY
Administrators: Joe Mancini, promoted to high school principal, and Kirk Lape, assistant high school principal.
LAUREL
Curriculum: Developed computer class partnership with California State University.
Renovations: Installed new state-of-the-art computer classroom.
MOHAWK
Administrator: Raymond Omer, junior/senior high school assistant principal.
NESHANNOCK
Administrator: Scott Seltzer, high school principal.
Renovations: Continuing elementary school renovation.
SHENANGO
Administrators: Christine Beck, director of special education, and Jeff Mathieson, assistant high school principal.
UNION

WILMINGTON
