MEDINA -- Medina County Fairgrounds will be a mecca for area cat lovers next weekend during the Sacred Cat of Burma Fanciers' 33rd annual Cat Fanciers Association championship cat show.
The shows are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 28. All breeds will be represented as hundreds of kittens and cats and their handlers compete for national, regional and international awards and the title of Best Cat. The Sacred Cat of Burma Fanciers members said the show has been a showplace for kittens and cats of the Birman breed. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and $3 for children 11 and younger.
Free mammograms
American Cancer Society's Breast Education Screening Together program is providing free mammograms to women who qualify.
To be considered, women must be between the ages of 40 and 64 and live in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Carroll counties. Income will also be used to determine a women's eligibility to receive a free mammogram.
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Northwest Ohio Affiliate funds the BEST program. The ACS received a $71,000 grant for BEST, which will pay for 400 mammograms.

UPMC commendation
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- UPMC Horizon's cancer program, available at both the Greenville and Shenango Valley campuses, has received a three-year approval with commendation from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. This approval is given only to facilities that have voluntarily committed to undergo a rigorous evaluation process and performance review.
UPMC Horizon met all 36 Commission on Cancer standards with no deficiencies and received commendations in five areas: Perfect submission to the National Cancer Database, 100 percent compliance with the American Joint Committee on Cancer on-site chart review, use of nationally recognized patient guideline, an outstanding prevention and early detection program, and cancer registry staff education.
The commission on Cancer's core functions include setting standards for quality; multidisciplinary patient care; surveying facilities to evaluate compliance with the 36 Commission on Cancer standards; and collecting data from approved facilities and using that data to develop effective education to improve cancer outcomes at the national, state and local level.
Facilities with Commission on Cancer-Approved programs must undergo an on-site review every three years.
Hormone replacement
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Dr. Joseph Meyn, obstetrics/gynecology, will present "Is Hormone Replacement Therapy Right For You?" from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Womancare Center of UPMC Horizon, affiliated with Magee Women's Hospital. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, is the use of synthetic forms of female hormones estrogen and progesterone in women whose bodies no longer produce the hormones on their own, such as women who have gone through menopause or have had a hysterectomy. HRT may alleviate the symptoms of menopause caused when the body stops producing hormones.
The decision to use HRT, a subject of controversy in the media, can be a difficult one for women confused by conflicting information. Dr. Meyn will discuss the latest HRT research, the pros and cons of using it, and how it can benefit individual women.

CPR class in Hubbard
HUBBARD -- A Heartsaver CPR class will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Hubbard Library. The program will cover CPR for adults, children and infants. It includes information on poison prevention, rescue breathing, obstructed airway and child issues. An information booklet and poison stickers will be available to participants. The program is open to the public for a nonrefundable fee of $35. Mike Kerr, a registered paramedic, firefighter and instructor for St. Elizabeth's Regional Learning Center for Cardiac Life Support will be the instructor. First aid course set
BOARDMAN -- A Heartsaver first aid course will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 19 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Campus, Azalea Room C. The first aid class covers topics such as controlling bleeding, caring for burns and how to respond to allergic reactions, seizures, amputations, hot and cold emergencies, shock, poisonings, insect bites and bee stings. Each participant will receive a first aid book and a two-year certification card.
