Some park roadsto close for race
YOUNGSTOWN -- Several roads within Mill Creek MetroParks will be closed from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday for the United States Cycling Federation Bike Race.
New Cross Drive, Cross Drive and Bears Den Drive from McCollum Road to West Park Drive will close for the race. Spectators and participants should use the Wick Recreation Area parking lots.
Scaffolding stolen
POLAND -- Township police are investigating a report of more than $2,000 in scaffolding that was taken from the front yard of a house under construction on Via Siena.
Rehlinger Masonry of Canfield reported the theft, which occurred sometime between Aug. 9 and Tuesday. Several houses are under construction on the street.
Child rapist sentenced
WARREN -- A Southington man was sentenced in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court on Wednesday to seven years in prison for raping an ex-girlfriend's young daughter.
Cory Zickefoose, 35, of 3176 Warren Burton Road, pleaded guilty to five counts of rape involving a juvenile, each of which could have carried a term of life in prison.
His sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will serve a total of seven years. He will also have to register as a sexually oriented offender upon release from prison.
Thomas Wrenn, an assistant county prosecutor, said Zickefoose was living in Lordstown with a woman and her children. Zickefoose's indictment stated he had forced contact with a female under 13 in summers of 2001, 2002 and 2003, fall 2003 and winter 2003.
Road projects to begin
LISBON -- The Ohio Department of Transportation will close state Route 164 north of Lisbon on Tuesday for culvert replacement. Work should be completed within three days. The recommended detour is east on U.S. Route 30 and state Route 154, north on state Route 11, east on state Route 344 back to state Route 164.
As part of the same project, eight culverts will be either repaired or replaced at various locations on state Routes 9 and 542 in Carroll County; state Route 152 in Jefferson County; and state Routes 7, 39 and 45 in Columbiana County. Impacts to traffic will vary.
Stanley Miller Construction Co. of East Sparta is contracted for this $585,000 project, which should be completed Oct. 31. For information on road closings and other traffic events, visit ODOT's Web site www.BuckeyeTraffic.org.
Baby's death probed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A dead 3-week-old girl taken to a hospital from the 1400 block of Willow Court around 7:45 a.m. Thursday showed no signs of trauma or abuse that would indicate foul play, said Lt. Robin Lees. He said the father told officers that the infant had been asleep in bed with him and his wife and they found the baby not breathing at 7:30 a.m.
Van windows shot out
YOUNGSTOWN -- The driver's side and passenger side windows of a van owned by Greater Friendship Baptist Church were shot out while the vehicle was parked inside the church's fenced lot on Lakewood Avenue, police said. The vandalism was discovered Thursday morning. Damage was estimated at $300.
Traffic, drug charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Drugs were found in a car pulled over in a construction zone for following too close behind another vehicle on Interstate 680, police said. The passenger, Albert Daniel Jr., 27, of Erie Street, was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of Ecstasy and possession of a dangerous drug (Tussinex) and served with an old warrant for failure to appear in court in June 2004 on charges of driving under suspension, unsafe vehicle and no seat belt. The driver was released at the scene Wednesday evening with a warning for following too close, no seat belt and not having his driver's license on him. Daniel was arraigned Thursday in municipal court. Bond was set at $25,000. He will be back in court Wednesday.
