HUBBARD SCHOOLS Board to pursue 5.2 mill levy

HUBBARD -- The Hubbard Exempted Village School District school board Thursday voted to place a 5.2 mill operating levy renewal on the November ballot.
The levy is for five years and would generate $1,047,214 annually. It was originally passed by voters in November 2001.
Board members said the money will be needed for textbooks and the enhancement of some facilities, such as a $100,000 language lab. The board is also considering additional programs on the elementary level and including sign language as a foreign language.
"There are a lot of things we are looking at, but at this point we are just looking," said Board Member Ray Wells.
Continued support
Board members said the community has been financially supportive of the school district in the past. Wells said he is hopeful that support from the community continues.
"I know money is tight, but I don't think the people of this community will turn their backs on us," he said.
Blaise Karlovic, school treasurer, said residents have a reason to put faith in the board and pass the levy -- fiscal responsibility. He said the district carried over $3.1 million in 2004 and $4.2 million in 2005.
According to Karlovic, the levy is still needed even with the carry-over in previous years. He said the district, at current spending levels, is projected to be operating at a deficit in five years.
"We pride ourselves in having a carryover so when the time comes that we need it, it will be there," he said.
