Council picks newest member

Officials also chose a company to replace a waterline along Deer Trail.
CANFIELD -- City council has filled a seat left empty by a resignation.
Longtime city resident Steve Rogers, 48, of Callahan Road is taking over for Kevin Hughes, who moved away. Council chose Rogers from nine applicants.
Hughes' resignation becomes effective Aug. 31. Rogers begins his duties Sept. 1. The council term ends Dec. 31, 2007.
Council also appointed Rogers to the Design Review Historical Preservation Committee. He replaces Sam Boak, another council member, on that committee. Boak is moving to a seat on the city planning and zoning commission.
Diverse background
Rogers is the general manager for Boardman Printing Division of Nomis Publications.
He is vice chairman of the Cardinal Joint Fire District and was a member of the Canfield Fire Department, which existed before the fire district formed. A retired Canfield police officer, he received the Officer of the Year award in 1997. In 2000, he was honored by the city for exemplary service, and was elected into the Canfield Police Department Hall of Fame in December 2003.
He is active on the Canfield Fourth of July Committee and is a trustee for First Night Canfield.
He is a member of the Republican Party Central Committee as a precinct committeeman, Canfield City No. 7.
In other business, council approved awarding a contract to replace a waterline on Deer Trail to JCM Construction of New Springfield, which had the lowest of four bids for the project at $135,650. City manager Charles Tieche recommended against replacing two storm sewers along the road.
The city had also solicited bids to replace the sewers because they would have been damaged during the line replacement. But Tieche said the new line will be installed under the road instead of alongside it where the old one is. That will allow the old line to be used while the new one is being installed, so residents can still have water.
Tieche said the city isn't sure when the project will begin, but that it will be sometime this year.
Tieche also said a state paving project on state Routes 62 and 46 is almost finished.
