Calling all entertainers
YOUNGSTOWN -- Applications are being accepted from entertainers for the sixth annual First Night Youngstown New Year's Eve Celebration with the Arts. Both single and group acts may apply; send material to the new First Night office, 20 Federal Plaza West Suite M18, Youngstown, Ohio 44503; or call (330) 742-0445.
Acts should be suitable for children or family entertainment and be self-contained. CDs, audio or video tapes may be submitted for consideration. Material must be received by Sept. 30. Performances are held in numerous venues at Youngstown State University and downtown area. The evening culminates with a midnight fireworks display.
First Night Youngstown is part of an international organization whose mission is to provide low-cost, nonalcoholic family-oriented New Year's Eve celebrations in cities across America and around the world.
Ballroom dancing
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Warren Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association will hold its monthly dance Sunday at The Orthodox Center, 1025 N. Belle Vista Ave. Samba lessons will be from 5:30-6:15 p.m. with open dancing from 6:15-9. Admission is $5 for USA Dance members, $8 for nonmembers and $2.50 for students.
In celebration of National Ballroom Dance Week, the Sept. 18 dance will be free and will feature a fox-trot lesson sponsored by Stephen Sobat of Studio One. The public is welcome at both events.
Final outdoor concert
WARREN -- The final outdoor program of the W.D. Packard Concert Band summer series will be Sept. 11 at 3 p.m. at Packard Music Hall. The program will be in remembrance of the Sept. 11 terror victims and will be titled "The Echo Never Fades." The free show starts at 7 p.m.
Party in the park
WARREN -- A music video will be filmed at A Party in Packard Park, which will be held Sunday from 3-8 p.m. Live entertainment will include the N-DEX Band, The 5IBs and Sting Ray Brooks doing a musical tribute to the late Roger Troutman. The video, to be produced by Greg Johnson of the Total Package Band, will be televised on Channel 15 in Warren and on Channel 9 in Youngstown.
A car show, games and line dancing will be just some of the events.
Cookie Pesce benefit
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Cookie Pesce scholarship fund-raiser will be at 9 p.m. Sept. 3 at Cedars Lounge, downtown. Admission is $7. Cookie Pesce, who died two years ago from breast cancer, was a local dance teacher, choreographer and director for more than 30 years. She worked on all local playhouse stages, YSU theater and many high school productions. She was inducted into Ursuline High School Hall of Fame.
The event will include music, dance, poetry and visual arts. Videography and paintings will be on display. Some of the musicians who will perform will include Obie Savage, Tim Raridon, Christina Pokopatz and Donnie Yellich. Other guests are Shea Cahill, videographer; Judy Szabo, Carol Rastaedt and Amy Barone, artists; Bill Koch, Stephanie Sockel and David Ensor, poets; and Sarah Terlecki and Kyle Rostan, dancers and choreographers.
