Out-homered Scrappers prevail, 5-3

Monday, August 15, 2005

Mahoning Valley captured its sixth straight victory.
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. -- The Jamestown Jammers hit more home runs than Mahoning Valley, but that was the only statistic the Scrappers didn't come out on top Sunday.
Chad Longworth's two-run single in the first inning got the Scrappers off to a fast start, and Mahoning Valley survived a trio of solo home runs by the Jammers in a 5-3 victory.
Cirilo Cumberbatch hit a solo homer of his own in the eighth inning, providing the final margin, as the Scrappers (28-25) won their sixth game in a row.
The teams meet again tonight at 7:05 p.m.
Longworth is hitting .320 this season and he went 3-for-5 on Sunday.
His single in the first inning followed a one-out single by Jose Constanza, then Matt Fornasiere's double.
The Scrappers made it 3-0 in the second when Cumberbatch singled, went to second on Jose Chavez's base hit, and scored on Constanza's single to center.
Bigger lead
Mahoning Valley's two-out rally in the fifth inning increased its lead to 4-0. Longworth and Chris Clem reached on infield singles, then Andy Lytle's hit to left scored Longworth.
Jamestown's Kris Harvey hit a solo home run in the sixth, then Mark Aranda and Greg Burns did the same in the seventh.
Dustin Roddy relieved Thomas Cowley for the Scrappers to start the eighth, and he shut out Jamestown on one hit to earn his sixth save.
Ryan Edell (3-2) pitched the first five innings for Mahoning Valley to pick up the win. He shut out the Jammers on four hits.
Christopher Volstad (1-2) allowed 12 hits and four runs in five innings for Jamestown.
Saturday
Evandy De Leon's two-run homer in the third inning started the Scrappers on their way to a 7-2 victory over Jamestown in the series opener.
Chavez led off the third with a single, setting up De Leon's homer.
The Scrappers added two more runs in the fifth. De Leon singled and stole second, then Fornasiere and Lytle drew walks to load the bases. Longworth followed with a two-run single.
Jamestown scored an unearned run in the sixth, but in the ninth, De Leon led off with a walk. He stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball, then scored on a throwing error.
Constanza then drew a walk and stole second and Chris Clem singled him home. Clem later scored on a single by Trevor Mortensen.
Kevin Dixon (3-2) went five innings allowing three hits and no walks. He struck out five.
