Volleyball rulesmeeting
The OHSAA will sponsor this mandatory meeting for all volleyball coaches and officials Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Salem High cafeteria.
All high schools must have a representative present for this meeting.
Prior to this meeting the Mahoning Valley Volleyball Officials' Association will conduct a local rules meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the Salem gym.
Charity golf
*YOUNGSTOWN -- Ankle and Foot Care Centers will sponsor a charity golf benefit for the local chapter of the American Diabetes Association at Pine Lakes Aug. 26.
Anyone interested in participating either as a sponsor or as a golfer can call Elizabeth Emch at (330) 629-8800 for more information.
*NEW BEDFORD, Pa. -- Over $5,000 was raised at the Golf Scramble for A Way With Words Foundation at Tanglewood golf course.
Proceeds from the event will benefit cancer research and the Silver Lining Fund.

U.S. wins Walker Cup
WHEATON, Ill. -- Jay Overton gave the United States its first Walker Cup victory since 1997, beating Nigel Edwards 1-up in the deciding match in the Americans' 12 1/2-11 1/2 triumph over Britain and Ireland on Sunday at historic Chicago Golf Club.
Overton, the Big Ten champion this year as senior at Indiana, two-putted from 20 feet on the 18th hole to secure the title after Edwards missed a 25-foot birdie try.
Brian Harman and Lee Williams also won singles matches for the United States. The 18-year-old Harman, the youngest player in U.S. team history, routed Rhys Davies 6 and 5, and Williams beat Gary Lockerbie 4 and 3.
In the other singles matches, six-time Walker Cup player Gary Wolstenholme beat Anthony Kim 1-up, and Matthew Richardson topped John Holmes 5 and 4.

Flames sign Hamrlik
CALGARY -- The Calgary Flames signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Roman Hamrlik on Sunday, their latest move in a busy offseason.
Terms of the deal weren't released. Hamrlik spent last season with the New York Islanders, scoring seven goals with 22 assists in 81 games.
Beach volleyball
HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIF. -- Rachel Wacholder and Elaine Youngs upset top seeds Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Sunday in the final of the AVP Huntington Beach Open.
Wacholder and Youngs won 21-15 and 21-16, becoming the first team in more than two years to sweep the 2004 Olympic Gold medalists in a final.
It was the second win of the season for second-seeded Wacholder and Youngs.

*MONTREAL -- Nineteen-year-old Rafael Nadal won on a hardcourt for the first time, beating 35-year-old Andre Agassi 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in the Rogers Cup final Sunday.
The French Open champ's left-handed shotmaking got the better of Agassi, who was missing the lines with his winners in a baseline battle interrupted 58 minutes after the first set by rain.
It was the top-seeded Spaniard's third victory in a row and his ATP-tour-leading ninth tournament win of the year. His eight previous wins, including the French Open, were on slower clay courts.
Nadal, who has a 16-match winning streak, won $400,000 while Agassi pocketed $200,000.
Fourth-seeded Agassi, who was coming off a win in Los Angeles two weeks ago, ended a 10-match winning streak.
*CARSON, Calif. -- Kim Clijsters won her WTA Tour-leading fifth title of the year, defeating Daniela Hantuchova 6-4, 6-1 in the JPMorgan Chase Open final Sunday.
Clijsters improved to 31-1 in the United States since winning the season-ending WTA Championships in November 2003.
