Young artists create masterpiece in summer art education project

YOUNGSTOWN -- Seven students from area schools created a mural at Youngstown State University as a part of the SMARTS summer arts education program.
The students in the Educational Mural Project designed and painted the colorful mural on a wall in the CATALYST office in Tod Hall on the YSU campus. CATALYST is the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning at YSU, and promotes and enhances teaching, research, practice, service, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
The mural encompasses concepts and symbols of learning.
Contributors
Overseeing the project was SMARTS teacher Angela Speece of Ellsworth, a YSU senior art education major. Speece has taught visual arts classes at SMARTS, Students Motivated by the Arts, for more than two years while earning her degree.
Students involved in the project are Brittney Grant, a ninth-grader at Campbell Memorial High School; Brett Banks, an eighth-grader at Volney Rogers Junior High School in Youngstown; Matia Gilbert, a 10th-grader at Youngstown Early College at YSU; Tyler Howell-Keene, a 10th-grader at Hubbard High School; Akeema Perkins, a 10th-grader at Hubbard High School; Astia Figueroa, a ninth-grader at Cardinal Mooney High School; and Neela Vickers, a 10th-grader from Youngstown.
SMARTS is an arts education partnership of YSU's College of Fine and Performing Arts and Beeghly College of Education.
