RETIREMENTS
Public health officer
VIENNA -- Lt. Col. Martha Livingston retired July 11 after serving 17 years with the Air Force Reserve and three years in the Army Nurse Corps.
She was the public health officer with the 910th Medical Squadron, Youngstown Air Reserve Station here for the past 17 years.
A graduate of Alliance High School, Livingston graduated in 1970 from the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing. She went on to receive a bachelor's degree from Youngstown State University and a master's degree in public health from the University of Pittsburgh
She and her husband Paul live in Youngstown and have three grown children.
Meritorious medal
LOWELLVILLE -- Senior Master Sgt. James R. Harrison, Bedford Road, received the Meritorious Service Medal at his retirement ceremony June 3 for his services from November 1967 to June 2005.
Harrison was the noncommissioned officer in charge of Communication and Navigation Systems, 910th Maintenance Squadron at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station, Vienna. He supervised the Communications and Navigation Systems Shop for the historic concurrent activation of both the 773rd Airlift Squadron and the 757th Airlift Squadron.
Elements of his shop had deployed five continents supporting the two-airlift squadron's efforts in the global war on terrorism.
Harrison authorized the responses for the Maintenance Group in response to the Base Realignment and Closure Commission that was used in the May 15, 2005, review.
Harrison also received an oak cabinent displaying his 12 awards and decorations.
DEPLOYED
Chief nurse going to La.
Ltc. Catherine Shutak has redeployed to Fort Polk, La., after serving one year in Iraq as the chief nurse with the 115th Field Hospital in Abu Ghraib Prison/ Hospital, where she earned a Bronze Star for her service.
The 115th Field Hospital was responsible for the health care of all detainees in Iraq including two detention hospital facilities, which they created at Abu Ghraib, near Baghdad, and Camp Bucca, in Southern Iraq.
Shutak, a Youngstown native, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Olinik Jr., Greenbush, Va. She is the granddaughter of Michael Olinik Sr. and the late Mary Olinik of Youngstown, and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Gibbons, Snow Hill, Md., and the late Theodore Egbert, and is married to David Shutak, formerly of Tarentum, Pa.
Shutak is a 1982 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School, 1987 graduate of Youngstown State University, and received her master's degree in trauma nursing in 1999 from the University of Kentucky.
TRAINING
Completed courses
Four armed services personnel with Mahoning Valley roots completed phases of their military training.
They are Gasper Buffa III and Dolishia K. King, both of Youngstown; Dacre Harris, Warren; and John G. Barry, Hubbard.
Marine Corps Pfc. Buffa III, completed the Administrative Clerk Course at Personnel Administration School at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Buffa, is the son of Sandra Barger and Gasper Buffa Jr.
Army Master Sgt. King graduated from the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. King is the daughter of Lola M. Workman of Youngstown.
Marine Corps Pvt. Harris graduated from the Ammunition Technician Specialist Course while assigned to Marine Corps Detachment Redstone Arsenal, Ala. He is the son of Tipaporn and Erman H. Harris of Warren.
U.S. Navy Ensign John G. Barry graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
