Scrappers pull past Cardinals



Mahoning Valley scored five runs in the sixth inning en route to an 8-2 victory.
AUGUSTA, N.J. -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers broke up a pitchers duel as they scored five runs in the sixth inning and went on to post a 8-2 victory Thursday over the New Jersey Cardinals in a New York-Penn League game.
The Scrappers, in second place in the Pinckney Division, returned to the .500 mark (25-25) as they won for the third straight time.
Mahoning Valley added two insurance runs in the eight inning and one more in the ninth.
Scrappers rally
New Jersey took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the rally by the Scrappers in the sixth took the Cardinals (25-25) out of the contest.
Jensen Lewis scattered four hits, struck out two and allowed a run in six innings of work to pick up his fourth straight victory this season.
Matthew Hayes came on in relief in the seventh inning, allowed three hits, struck out three and gave up a run for his second save.
Zach Zuercher (4-5) of the Cardinals worked 51/3 innings, allowing four hits, five runs and striking out five.
Matthew Fornasiere hit a triple and single to pace the Scrappers. Cirilo Cumberbatch went 2-for-5 with two singles and drove in two runs. Jose Chavez also hit a pair of singles.
Matt Wilkerson hit a double and home run to pace the Cardinals.
