GYMNASTICS Mineral Ridge girl wins national titles at 38th AAU Junior Olympics



NEW ORLEANS -- Erika Stewart of Mineral Ridge, competing in the optional 14- to 15-year-old division, won national titles on balanced beam (9.55 points) and floor exercise (9.575) at the 38th AAU Junior Olympic Games.
She was one of six members of the Youngstown Ohio Gymnastics Institute who participated in the event.
Stewart also placed seventh on uneven parallel bars and ninth on vaulting (8.75) on her way to a fifth place finish all around with a score of 36.175.
In the girls open optional (16-19), Alex Tatebe of Warren won a national title on vault (9.325). She qualified for the finals on uneven parallel bars and beam where she placed 10th and ninth, respectively, and took the bronze medal in all around (38.825).
Male gymnasts
Donald Yeager of Austintown competed in boys open optional 12-13, capturing national titles on rings (7.9) and horizontal bar (7.0). He won silver medals on pommel horse (7.3), parallel bars (7.9) and all around (47.9). He also placed fifth on floor exercise (8.4) and vault (9.4).
Zachary Boyl of Youngstown won two silver medals, on rings (7.3) and vault (9.7), and two bronze medals for floor exercise (8.8) and horizontal bar (6.6). He qualified to finals in six events, placing sixth on pommel horse and seventh on parallel bar, and he scored 44.1 points all around.
Zak Leger of Austintown competed in boys open optional (14-15). He won a national title on floor exercise (9.3), and won silver medals on rings (7.2), parallel bar (8.0) and horizontal bar (7.2). Leger won a bronze medal on vault (9.3), was fifth on pommel horse and finished second all around (45.9).
Brian Cirbus of Austintown won a silver medal on floor exercise (8.4) and bronze medal on parallel bar (6.7). He placed fourth on pommel horse and vault, fifth on rings and finished fourth all around (44.1).
