WARREN RELAY FOR LIFE Doctor will be honored for fund-raising efforts

WARREN -- Dr. Robert T. Brodell will be installed into the American Cancer Society's National Relay for Life Hall of Fame during the Warren Relay for Life at Mollenkopf Stadium on May 13.
Brodell, of Warren, became involved with the American Cancer Society in 1985 and was instrumental in bringing the Relay for Life fund-raiser to Trumbull County in 1994.
During the first event, 14 teams walked the track at the stadium for 24 hours and raised $28,000.
Last year, 280 teams at Trumbull County's five Relay for Life events (Cortland, Liberty, Lordstown, Niles, Warren) raised $920,000.

This year thousands of volunteers hope to raise $1 million, and Trumbull County is the No. 1 Relay for Life community in the country in its population group of 150,000-250,000.
Brodell also has been involved in the Ohio Division Relay for Life committee, which has seen the events grow to 200 throughout the state, with more than $13 million raised in 2004.
On the national level, Brodell was a member of the National Relay for Life Advisory Team from 1999 to 2002. He helped recruit 3 million volunteers and raise more than $1 billion for the war against cancer.
He was instrumental in getting Relay for Life volunteers involved with the national debate on cancer issues through his "brainchild," Celebration on the Hill. This event brought American Cancer Society volunteers from all 50 states to Washington, D.C., in 2002 for a relay-type event on the National Mall.
Brodell now serves on the American Cancer Society National Income Development Committee and the National Advocacy and Public Policy Committee. He has been awarded the American Cancer Society's St. George National Award for Distinguished and Exemplary Leadership.
Members of the Relay for Life Business Unit and volunteer leaders from communities around the country will participate in the Warren event to honor Brodell.
