On March 19, 2005, The Vindicator reported the conviction and sentencing of Donna Butler in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for assaulting her daughter-in-law. The article reported that testimony showed Butler "used an aluminum baseball bat on her daughter-in-law" and then punched her. More precisely, the daughter-in-law testified that Butler struck her with the edge of a child-size aluminum baseball bat and did not take a full swing. The jury decided that Butler was not guilty of felonious assault with the bat, but convicted Butler of simple assault, apparently for the punching.
